Mister Rooster has what looks like a fungal infection between his legs. It is white, clumpy, and cloudy. His skin has also become bright red in many places and he is balding on his stomach (which could be the result of him aggressively grooming trying to clear the infection himself). It's clearly bothering him since he's been far more aggressive than usual. None of the hen's have it so it's probably not mites or anything else transferrable. Does anyone know what it is and what I can do for him? Thanks!:)

Malaseb shampoo, mostly recommended for dogs/cats, but has been used by chicken owners too. Malaseb is a cure-all, fungus, bacterial, etc. You can google: Malaseb shampoo, price varies, vet's are expensive but might have it ASAP. Hope it helps.

Could I have a picture? I believe my hen may have something like this on her butt- there are no feathers, and it is below her vent. It is white a sticks out a little....

This is what it looks like. My neighbor thought it might have something to do with hormones but if your hen has it, too, that might not be the case. It looks a lot like a fungus but I'm not entirely sure. There's a lot on the internet about internal funguses in chickens but I haven't come across anything about external funguses.

Becareful, the generic only has 1% of only one active ingredient. The true "Malaseb" brand has two Active Ingredients: Miconazole Nitrate 2%, Chlorhexidine Gluconate 2%. I have used this, and love it, although more expensive than others. You only need a pea to dime size, small bottle should last a small flock awhile (6mo. - Year). Please let us know if the alternative works. Malaseb cures more than fungus. Some antibacterials will breed more yeast or fungal infection. Malaseb might work if you are not sure, or more than one problem.

Malaseb description: generalized or multifocal therapy of dermatitis in dogs, cats and horses. Malaseb Shampoo contains Miconazole – an antifungal with potent activity against fungi and yeast – and Chlorhexidine Gluconate – a proven antimicrobial agent active against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. This synergistic formulation effectively removes scales, degreases the skin and kills cutaneous microorganisms that primarily or secondarily cause dermatitis. Clinical trials show Malaseb to be an effective treatment and control of Seborrheic dermatitis associated with Malassezia pachydermatitis and Staph intermedius. Malaseb is free from dyes and perfumes to reduce possible exacerbation of skin problems and its innovative surfactant base removes damaged lipids without stripping the coat.

Just ordered the Malaseb shampoo for my poor barred rock hen, Abigail. I will let you know how it works, if it works. Thanks for suggesting it could be a fungal infection.!
