Funky 16 - Progressing Post

Yeah, it’s been a new experience this year. This is my first flock and the oldest are a year and a half, so this is everyone’s first time being broody. I’ve had 3 broodies since the start of spring and they all hatched their chicks or accepted the chicks I gave them. Except this last one. I don’t know if she knew they weren’t hers or she’s just a homicidal broody.

She’s still sitting, so I don’t know if I should just give her an egg from my other hens to incubate or break her. Since she’s already been sitting for this long, would it be a bad idea to let her go for another 21 if I give her an egg?
After they have been setting a couple of weeks, its best to give them a break from brooding so they can build up their reserves. She will no doubt quit soon too, but probably be back at it in a few weeks.

Oh, man, I just looked and it says the meal maker could be a cream legbar or olive egger. I really, really hope I got the cream legbar because that’s what I have been wanting but never wanted to pay the $24 for lol ( because I already paid a lot for my ameraucana & blue laced wyandotte ).

I wouldn’t be upset if Chunk turns out to be a partridge rock, but I was really hoping for that penedesenca. I have enough roos as is, so I’m really hoping she’s just a very outgoing she.

Oh, shoot, I forgot they had Penedesencas and I totally missed that in your post! I'll bet that's what Chunk is, then! The leg color fits, too! :fl

Agree on the Legbars, that's exactly my point of view, too! 🤣 She was free, so I wouldn't necessarily be disappointed if she was an Olive-egger, either, but man, Cream Legbars 😍 😍 😍

I tried breaking her after she decided on the murder route, but I wasn’t able to do any long term breaking because I don’t have a wire dog crate. I hope she gives up on her own, but I’m worried she’s the type that’ll sit until she keels over.

Keep dragging her out of the box, put her outside, lock her in the run, anything to distract her. Some broodies get very ill of health not taking care of themselves, not eating, drinking or dustbathing.

Weird question, but does Chunk look older than a two day old in her picture? Same goes for the columbian wyandotte and green queen.
She looks the same age as the others. Chicks can grow at different rates, some will spring up like weeds, others take their good old time maturing.

I actually kinda disagree

To me, those three look like last week's hatch. But I certainly could be wrong! Just that their wing feather growth and the fact that they have more defined necks (as opposed to the total roundness of the day olds) makes me suspect they are a tiny bit older.

But, again, I could definitely be wrong!

I don’t know, she looks the same or at least close to the age as the chicks my other broody hatched a little over a week ago.

Yeah, the more I look at her and the others, the more I think they are older. I also looked at Meyer’s website and they say the bin chicks from the days hatch are put in after 3pm and I was there 2pm-ish on the day of hatch. Not to mention the green queen already had feathers started on her legs instead of being all fluff.

Well, getting last week’s hatch is absolutely possible. I didn’t see anything saying the chicks were older, but it’s still possible that they forgot to put the sign up. The set up was a little different from when I was in there back in April.
