funky combs with pics

We've got 2 roos with spots on thier combs. It's like they are turning black from the tips. If it is frostbite can I do somthing about it or just wait. We have a heat lamp in the coop and they sit right under it. Could it be some fungus or something?

I think it is a frostbite.... i don't know how to cure it so I always them alone (Cuz I don't want to make it worse if I do something wrong) and they heal by themselves.............well mine do

I was just going to post up the same questions. My Doms have black spots all over the combs on most of the roos, figured it was frostbite. Very cold and snowy here this winter and I don't have heat in the coop. Doing fine otherwise, healthy and all the hens are laying, but wanted to know if this is something that would grow out/heal with time? If so how long does it usually take?

My roos have spots too...it's a little touch of frostbite. Severe frostbite, like to a whole point on the comb, will eventually die and fall off. Once black it's dead tissue. Little spots like that is still dead tissue but it will fall off eventually and leave red comb underneath it. Maybe check for a draft. If they are all adults and huddled together under the lamp, they're really cold. A draft with moisture in the coop will cause frostbite.

Rub vasoline on there combs should do the trick

It will heal much faster if you dub than if you just leave it.

The vasoline only works as a preventative. Since the black portions are dead tissue, they will fall off and not grow back. If it gets really bad, you will have to dub him so he will not get a bad infection.

my rooster got like that from fighting with my neighbors rooster. Actuall both of them did. watch them some time to see if they're fighting. they are either just playing around or fighting for dominance. How old are they. The open tissue could also lead to frost bite. i wish i could show you my Cookoo maran rooster he may not have any spikes on his comb in spring they're so bad. Good Luck! the problem with roosters is that their combs are so big when they tuck their heads to sleep at night their combs stick out.
