You should be able to do emoticons. When you start a new post or reply to a post, you'll see some things at the top of the message box you type in. Like "Size", bold, Italics, and so on. One of the symbols you should see is a smiley face, click on that and a window will open up with a bunch of emoticons...just click on one and it will be inserted into your message wherever your cursor was last.

P.S. Not sure if it's the same if you're using a mobile device...I always use my laptop for BYC.
