Funniest Things A City Slicker Has Ever Said To You?

Well it's a half hour drive to get to a sprouts, trader joes, jimbos or any of the other organic places. There is a farmers market here in town but it's not that impressive. :/ there's a bigger one "down the hill" but again that's a 20-30 minute drive.

I debate signing up for one of those veggie delivery things (weekly organic local fruits veggies delivery) but hubs can be picky with his eating too. :/

I live in a small rural town where the only grocery store is 10 minutes, Wal-Mart and Home Depot are 30 minutes, and any real "city" is 2 hours, so 20 - 30 minutes to a farmer's market is standard for me. A former city girl, I've had to learn to adjust my shopping methods accordingly.

CSAs can be good, but you don't always get a choice of veggies. Do you have a place where you can grow a few veggies? If you keep it small, they don't take that much time. You can even grow in pots or tubs (I have my asparagus in a galvanized horse trough and, since it's a perennial, It requires only occasional applications of compost.)

Since I, too, travel that far for fresh/organic, I buy in bulk and freeze or can for the winter months. Plus, those Green Bags will help fresh veggies keep much longer. I have a large freezer in the garage so I can stock up on bread, or other items on sale, and buy grass fed meat in bulk from the farmer. My son and I went trout fishing and put our catch in the freezer, too. Deciding on what to have for supper is easy, although I may have to take it out to thaw before leaving for work. However, that beats having to stop by the store on my way home.

Sounds like you may have to alter your shopping habits a bit to get what you're looking for. Once you're used to less frequent trips to the store, you'll appreciate the savings in time and gas, not to mention how nice it is to have food on hand when you want it. Since I freeze/can and grow much of my own, I make very few trips to the grocery store. In fact, I find having to go to the store frequently a major pain. I went last Saturday, and still have everything I need.

Good luck.

Well I do have a little garden plot going have no fear there ;) going to the farmers market would have hubs kinda wroth with me lol. He enjoys the sleeping in time and times I've had to sneak away in the am for regular shopping etc...he misses me lol. (He likes his sleeping in)

Freezing...well. This freezer isn't that big. I've got a little chest freezer on my list of things I want to get once I start bringing in the income but it's kinda lower down on the list.

I confess, the stores down here (trader joes sprouts etc) it freaks me out a bit that they can never say where their beef comes from. It could be Canada New Zealand USA elsewhere....don't get me wrong Alberta beef is some danged tasty beef, I miss living where I did, I drove by a butcher that they raised their own cattle, they weren't officially organic but they were grass fed, no hormones and they didn't pump em full of antibiotics either.

Cattle there was nothing like the feedlots they have down here...

Well, in that case, the morning sounds like the perfect time for you to go to the Farmer's Market: he gets to sleep in while the house is quiet and you get to shop while the selection is largest and freshest and before the crowds descend like locusts. You're a perfect match! I was the one who wanted to sleep in a little on the weekend, but my *ex* (emphasis on ex) liked to rise early and thought everyone else should get up when he did. So, I fixed the problem which is how he became an *ex*.

As to the salt and birds.....actually it's true.....that's the whole point of the lesson for kids! If you can get close enough to a bird to put salt on its tail your close enough to catch it.

7 Biddies,Β  I LOVE the way you fixed your problem (with hubby)

He tried to be sneaky about it by cheerfully walking into the bedroom and delivering a cup of coffee ... whichmy soundly sleeping self hadn't asked for. He did the same to my son by stirring his coffee so loudly outside his bedroom, that the spoon against the cup sounded like a clanging church bell. The list of manipulations, which he angrily conceded didn't work with me, is long. In all fairness to him, I warned him, but I guess he didn't believe me. Another mistake on his part.

First husband learned the same lesson. :/

Where are you, anyway? At our home place in Nevada, there is a general store a couple of miles away, and the nearest supermarkets are twenty some odd miles away, over sometimes closed passes. Fortunately, if one pass is closed, we generally find the other one open.

The reason pickup trucks are so popular in rural areas is that people tend to stock up - at Farmer's Markets or elsewhere - and bring it home to can or freeze. We have a neighbor down the road and across the highway who raises and processes broilers, so we can buy from her and know exactly how and where they were raised. It isn't fuel efficient if you have to make ten or twelve trips to bring the stock bedding or the year's supply of locker beef home. Look in your local ads and Craigslist and see if there are custom slaughter outfits, or people who sell their own beef. A custom slaughter outfit can direct you to someone who might be willing to sell you a locally raised animal. When I lived in Oregon, I used to buy a yearling wether every year from a high school classmate's older brother.

I'm moving to bantams since my doctor has beaten me about the head and shoulders about not eating eggs - which really makes no difference because I have an hereditary trait that causes me to synthesize too much cholesterol whether I eat any or not. So, bantams lay fewer and smaller eggs, keep hubby happy, and remove temptation from me.
