funny chick pics!

Hi everyone!

I'm a newbie here and I thought I'd join in the fun and post some pics of my babies! This is my 1st experience into the chicken world and so far its been a lot of fun.

I have 9 chicks: 3 ameraucanas, 3 barred rocks, and 3 production reds. They are one week old today. I can't beleive how quickly they develop! They are very feisty and fun for the family to watch.

1 question - At what age do you start to see roo characteristics developing? The feed store said these guys are pullets, but that a male might sneak in.

Thanks!

Holly,
Great chick pictures !

Most chicks start showing roo characteristics around 4-6 weeks, but others earlier. Roosters usually have more development in the comb and wattles around that age. They will also try to crow.

When I got my 7 chicks, I names them right away (they were all supposed to be pullets). There was one that was a bit bigger and more bossy & boisterous, so I named her Marie, after a bossy Aunt. (Don't tell Aunt Marie!) . Marie ended up being a roo, and the interesting thing is that he was always a bit bigger than the rest, and was always the first - firt to show wing feathers, first to fly a little, first to show feathers on his back, etc.

Precious little things.

I explained to my nearly-three-years-old niece that Auntie was getting some baby chicks. She knows what chicks are from her book about Old MacDonald's farm.

So now she is excited, and can't wait to see Auntie's "peep-peeps."

My chicks are due to be sent on 10/31/07. I am very nervous, and hope they arrive safely.

That's how I look when I attempt to ice skate...
