Every morning and evening I go out to my chicken coop, with a flight pen and check on my chickens. I feed and water them, supply them with grit, and hold a few then head off to work, or bed. Everytime I enter the coop I get a head count and make sure everyone is okay and nobodys hurt. I have fourteen chickens, not a large amount, but not a small amount either. Tonight I counted thirteen, then double counted, and counted again. I could not for the life of me find the fourteenth chicken. He couldn't have escaped I thought to myself. Not even a mountain lion could penetrate my "Coop from hell" as my good friend put it. I looked, and looked and out of the corner of my eye I saw a leg sticking out of a five gallon bucket I bought from Murdochs.
What happened was, I have a feed bucket conveniantly in the corner of the coop , I put a piece of plywood over it so the chickens cant get into it and poop in the crumbles. Well... Sure enough they decided it was a good spot to roost. So not only is it covered with poop, but the plywood has moved a couple inches from its original position. What I think happened is the chicken slipped, or was pushed off of the board and managed to catch his leg in the space between the five gallon bucket and the plywood, catching his legs, and leaving him hanging upside down for who knows how long. While that is a bad and possibly fatal position to be in. She is doing alright. Her leg is fine, at least she is walking fine. The rest of the good news is the other chickens didn't decide to pluck her while she hung defenseless.
I'm not sure anybody else will get a good laugh out of this, but I sure thought it was funny afterwords seeing my chicken hang upside down. Then the dizzy reaction it had when I put her back on her feet.
