My girls are soooo funny. They only get to free range for a few hours, 4-5 days a week. It was beautiful today, we let them out at noon and we were sitting in our chairs watching them....Well, about twenty minutes into free ranging, Eunice ( a barred rock), came 'flying' into the yard making a horrible racket, from the edge of the woods......half pain, half egg song. She was running toward the coop, about 30 feet from the coop, she stopped --looked to her left and off she went after a bug...... after a minute she started running toward the coop, making that horrible sound, a few feet later she stops and scratches in a pile of leaves--as if nothing is going on, then proceeds with her 'song', moving toward the coop--this went on for about 10 minutes and then she literally FLYS thru the run and into the coop--screaming at the top of her lungs... Dh said 'what on earth was that'---I said 'she needed to lay an egg, I guess'! Before I finished saying that---out walks Eunice, she shakes, goes into the yard and walks to where the other girls are, to continue her free ranging!! Dh was laughing so hard, he had tears in his eyes...I went to check and sure enough, she had laid an egg.... She reminds me of the kids in the comic strips (Family Circle) that run everywhere before they actually reach their destination! Are chickens fun???
