I have been trying to get my two girlies to lay their eggs in a pretty new laying box complete with curtains. I added a couple of golf balls to encourage them to try out their new area. Day one: both golf balls were moved outside the laying box and the eggs were outside. Day two: golf balls were in the box, eggs were outside the laying box. Day three: one golf ball was outside the box with both eggs. Day four: I took the egg box out and let them lay wherever they want. Funny, funny girls!

My new layers kick everything out of the nesting boxes, including the laid eggs that are in there!!!! You can lead them to the nest, but you just can’t make them lay there!!! :lau
Good luck! Enjoy those fresh eggs!!!!!

Well, you can make sure the fronts of the nests are high enough to deter eggs from being expelled..but I agree there is nothing much more detrimental to nest bedding than a new layer.

Tho I have just had a pullet start laying, she is the only one I think I've ever had that did not make a mess of the nests...she did lay her first egg on the poop board tho and it got broken and eaten, all the rest one every day in a not messed up nest...but still not complaining.
