funny looking egg

one of the birds laid this egg, and the shape, the swirl pattern on the tip, and the wrinkles has me curious. is a funny looking egg like this one just something that sometimes happens, or is this an indication of something wrong with the bird? the shell is hard. is this egg safe to consume?

That looks like what they call a "body-checked egg" the biggest factor seems to be age, know my old ones lay them fairly often. http://www.thepoultrysite.com/publications/1/egg-quality-handbook/20/bodychecked-eggs They are usually normal inside and perfectly fine to eat.
