No, I have an old camera that does that and I don't know how to disable it. I could photoshop it out if you want.

What type of camera? I had a Kodiak once that had date stamps, but somewhere in the settings it could be disabled.

Cropping is fine, as long as it doesn't make the photo too small to judge.
