Fuzzy's Farm

Robin-

I put three of Birds eggs in the incubator.

In the next few days, I will see if CL had a clue. All I have ever witnessed is him being with the big showgirl. He likes the older hens.

Where is Nova? Did she go and get herself banned?

AND WHERE IS PIMENTO??????????????????????

She is supposed to be hanging around....

sorry mom. That sucks.

I hope nova isn't in too deep...........

yesterday evening i tore a bale of straw apart in the camper, boy what a difference! I figured i could use the pichfork to toss it aside to do the poop scrape with the shovel. They weren't wanting to walk on the floor, whoever said bird's feet don't feel cold was full of hooey! When i got there today they were all rooting around happily eating little bits of straw. (great, now they will be pooping straw!) But happy. And it cut the chill right out of the air! :)

This should help with the d'uccles poop tracking too, hopefully! I like the feathered feet for appearance, but not very practical.

Tonight i'm going to bed early, i haven't done a trial run of my new going to work route so have to be up even earlier than usual!!

Nah, not in to deep. Though the infraction still stands, though I did dispute it. Don't think its fair. What I think however is irrelevant. Anyway! I was just chilling with kids. Their father is off to school, not here, makes it nice to just chill with them. Still not talking to the duffenschmirtz. Why would I want to talk to some one who tells me in MY house that they can't stand me most of the time... hello, in MY HOUSE!? Yeah. I am a passive aggressive person when it comes to dealing with him. I give it a month and he'll be looking for a new place to live. I can dream.

ANYWAY! Mom, I am sorry about your girl and quail. I know how you feel. I am thinking, chicken wire hoop runs... I saw a guy on youtube I think it was who had a whole set up of hoop runs that ran all over the yard, they weren't that big, no higher than his knee. His birds navigated the mazes of the run to run around and get to the safe area from their coop in the loft of his garage. Was pretty darn cool actually. LOL, Something to think about LOL

About the soup... I woudn't tell, but I bet the birds would like it. HEHE

I had a HUGE quote of advice for you SS last night... and the internet ate all of it

I would reccomend putting the coop up on cinder blocks/ treated lumber and not allowing them under it or only allowing the chickens access to half. It is not going to be fun to dig out birds/ eggs from under 10' of coop. I have 2' of clearance to grab my birds and it is 3' deep and it is still difficult to grab them sometimes... stinkers.
Make sure the center is well supported once it is up too.

If you get chicks you will spend more money...There are more things to buy/make. I have a New Chick Owner link in my siggy below. If you get straight run you may get all roos (hopefully not) Better to get sexed chicks.
If you get POL hens/pullets you will get eggs quicker and spend less money in the long run (there is less heartbreak IMO)
BUT chicks are soooo much fun! I had 2 chicks in my house for a few weeks and did not notice a difference in dust... but after 2-3 weeks I couldn't stand the chirpping at all hours of the night and they had to go out to the garage! (plus they got to go in the big chick brooder!)

I painted the inside of my coop white to allow more light to be reflected inside... also I painted the floor so there wouldn't be any moisture absorbing into the wood. Some people like to put lanoleum down to make it even easier to clean.
In the summer you might have to add a fan to the coop.

I have an enclosed run attached to my coop and it is wonderful to let the babies "outside" if I have to go somewhere or there is a hawk hanging around... I know they are safe.
They also have a open top run that is pretty big... and they are spoiled... they get to run around the human yard too.
In the run I have lots of hidey holes for them to go in incase a hawk gets brave.

The enclosed run is sand and I hang my feeder... I have very little loss of food... if any

There is ventalation on the north and south top of the coop

I don't leave the food or water in the coop area anymore unless they will be locked in (which is almost never)
This spring... I need to raise that lower roost a little too (the littler babies liked to roost on it)

They have all that space... that is just chicken space! The side to the right, with the white lattice, I have blocked off until some of the vegitation grows back this spring. They ate all the little maple trees and all their cover that would hide them (like they were never fed
