I like litter in the run, i have found that it does promote more bugs; some will say that damp is bad though for the birds, but as long as you have dirt/sand and not clay i think it's all good. I just haven't liked it in the coop because it don't have anywhere to drain when it gets wet, and then ammonia builds up. So far in the coop i prefer a shallower bedding that gets changed as it starts to smell; right now i'm using a bale of straw and now that the weather has dropped to freezing again i can change it; that wet bout brought out the stink!

In the run you can always hose it down good in the summer to "clean" it if needed, and if you don't like it you can always shovel it away! I throw my leaves into the run, as all i have is sand without topsoil over there, and i think MAYBE next year there may be some grass, but i'm sure the birds will scarf it down; they sure do like the worms though! I also have a fenced off flower bed in the center of my run, which i imported good dirt and compost, and "seeded" with worms. SOMETIMES the worms will migrate outside the fence line, always good times for the birds, lol. As i get better and better soil, i'm sure the worms and bugs will migrate more and more.

Bobry- thanks for the empowering words! These ladies are some tough birds! LOL
I was taught by my mother that no man would ever take care of me and in her words "Men are good for nothing."
I am with Kim, in the respect that if you tell me I can't I will prove to you just how much I can.... and will.
At a young age I was put incharge of my brothers and at 14 I helped my mother raise my sister (an infant)., and by help... I mean while mom was at work, I was mom. So after school and all through the summer. Not that my mom was a bad mom... she had to work because dad sure as heck wasn't home or bringing in enough money (if any)
If you ask my brothers who raised them... they will say me... Maybe that is why neither of them graduated... babies raising babies....

BF enjoys that I am able to do things on my own... but likes to feel needed, so I let him take care of a lot of the "man" duties around the house. BF was shocked when we first started dating about how strong I am! LOL... He tells me that I man-handle everything...
I can't imagine not being able to do anything for myself... some women, I wonder if they have someone to wipe their rears...

Well behaved women rarely make history...

Aww. Bob, we do like our guys, you just have to remember that unfortunately not all guys are good ones like you seem to be. Behind every strong woman apparantely is a story of a not-so-strong guy........... But the bright point to all of this is that AFTER the heartache comes a better life, and for the guy who appreciates strong girls...........i guess if they wonder where to find them look for the ones with coops, and especially the ones without straight corners, LOL. (Cause we all seem to like to build stuff too)

Well, it was a decision I made myself, unlike what Kim had to do, but as of right now I am feeling relief that I made that decision. Now, later on when they are gone, I know I will miss them. But, I firmly believe that when a person makes a decision then they need to stick by it. Just like when I get rid of some of my birds, I will miss them but I need to do what is best for me now. So don't be sad.

But where do the girls go to find the guys who are into "girls like us", that's what i wanna know!

I wish we weren't all so spread out over MI, because the more i get to know everyone the more i wish we could hang out regularly. I bet it would make for some really great summers! (Crafts, building, birds, ..........conversations about said birds that only a bird-lover could understand.....LOL)

Have you all heard of bountifulbaskets.org? I think I'm going to sign up here in Ok but it is in most every state. It's a fresh food coop that's based mainly out of small towns and run by volunteers. You buy a "basket" that has items you select and pick it up each week (you don't have to do it every week). Sounds like a much better way to get fruits and veggies if you can't grow your own garden (or just don't want to - ha).

Fuzzy, that's good to hear. It made sense to me. I also put pine chips inside the coop and clean them out whenever they get to smelling. Deep litter in there doesn't seem to work well but maybe I'm doing it wrong. I love your idea of putting a flower bed in the center of the run - oh, so many ideas and not enough time - lol - but I think this is genius so may go out and look at locations inside my run today - hmmmm.
