5 boys! Wow! I had 3 and I thought that was wild - LOL!
Those are BEAUTIFUL roos, Nova! I want one!

Believe it or not, in the beginning of my chicken days I had 9 boys. Re-homed the 2 oegb boys right away because they were like little freakin' gang boys. They teamed up and picked on everybody. Then I lost 5 to predators. Got back up in roo numbers when I got bantams last year and 2 turned out to be boys and my sebright hen hatched 1 out, as well. They all do pretty well together. Have their own ladies to attend to and protect. The big boys don't pick on the little guys, but my alpha roo, Newton, is always reminding my other big boy, Neil, of his place. It's always funny watching the chase down. He doesn't really fight him just chases him. LOL

Nova, I love Sting. He looks so awesome, but I would never be able to pass him off as a resident we've always had. Boo. David Bowie, however, maybe we can fool DH with a story of Newton having molted and his colors changed. Gosh, would he not be happy with me. LOL

LOL These guys are the first ones that I have had that I do not want to butcher for real... Isn't that sad? LOL. They are just such nice boys! AND having 6 rooster in the 12x28 you'd think I'd have serious problems and fighting, but I don't. The last fight was between Skatter and one of the cockerels... But they know where they stand in the order. AND even run from Fritz when he say MOVE in his little Fritz The Jerk way. LOL, he's such a Napolean.

I still love Newton. He's so pretty, reminds me of my favs minus the feathered feet...

He's a favorite with us. Neil, however, is second to last on that list, poor guy can't get no respect. LOL

Florus wasn't getting any respect either until I sectioned off one coop and part of the run to make a pen for him and his girls. Wasn't pretty the first few days, but now he calls them to the treats, purrs to them when they lay eggs, and will fight thru the fence if one of the others gets to close to HIS fence. LOL. Unless it is Rod Stewart, then he backs away. Rod Stewart HATES him and will steal the girls back if I let him. Not kidding. LOL.

Anyway, if you have to work tomorrow, have a safe drive. Gotta hit the sack. Nite

Nope. No work. No doctor appointments. Nothing. I have to watch the weather forecast before I go to bed. Watched News8 at 6pm and they are trying to tell us we're going to get 5-10" here Weds night thru Thurs morning. I'm hoping channel 13 says otherwise.

Morning all.. Hope everyone has a great day! My hubbie and I worked on big coop until 8.30 last night, all that's left is roof and door for nesting box . My question? Is 3 nesting boxes enough for 8 hens? And another question, I read that 2 by 4's make great roosting poles? Is this true? Hope so, because we put in two 4 foot long, made out of them! Haven't opened up new coop to them yet, have to put roof on still. Any input is always appreciated, all oof you have been a lot of help! Especially you Nova and Gigi..

Morning All !
Savannah, I used 2 x 4 (widest side up) for my roost. Where it is colder (like here 8 out now) they can snuggle down on top of the feet to help keep them warmer. Instead of wrapped around say a pole with toes exposed to the cold. IMO it also gives them more surface to perch on when sleeping.
I also have 17 LF hens and a ten hole nest box. They only use 3 holes and wait in line to get in. They always lay in the same holes. I think you will be fine with 3.

Nova I like David. NO I don't want him unless you can do some magic and turn him into a SLW or orp. Too bad he won't look as pretty in freezer camp.

Thank goodness, sun predicted for to day, my batteries have used up everything. Recharge time! At least till the next round.
Think I'll go snow blow and try to get it close to the ground maybe they (the birds) will go out today.

Thanks Rusty had heard that they liked the 2 by 4's and yes we did put them where it's the wide side I guess meaning the 4 inches width. And glad the three nest boxes will be enough, would of hated to see hubbies face if I told him we needed more! Lol! Have great day everyone gotta go to work!,
