Fuzzy's Farm

Happy Easter to all of you!

We had our Easter yesterday with the kids and grandkids. It was really nice as today we just kind of hung out. Big storm last night and the dogs were going crazy so we didn't sleep a lot. Made up for it today - LOL.

So three of the eggs the girls laid today were bloody on the outside. Just kind of smeared. I went out and checked everyone's vents and didn't see anything unusual except that some of them are a bit dirty and I need to clean and do some NuStock in case it's gleet. There was a bloody smear in one of the nest boxes but not a huge amount of blood - maybe a teaspoon smeared around. I'm so worried as don't want anything happening to the girls. Do you have any ideas about what's going on? Nobody is acting weird except I think Marple is broody. I took her off the nest tonight and sat her on the roost and she didn't look very happy about it.

Big meeting with our Dean tomorrow. Evidently he thinks our department needs to get along better. We have one guy who is always running over to the Dean and complaining so I think the D has a skewed picture. Everyone else does okay, especially since most of us just teach and don't really hang out together. Geeesh, there's always one who ruins everything for all the rest. Everyone is on pins and needles to see what the D is going to do to us. Oh well, I just try to stay out of the way but on this one I may be standing up and telling what's really going on. Wish me luck. At least I have tenure and full professor so he can't really fire me if I tell him that he's not seeing the full pic. Geesh.

I have had an occassional blood smear. usually though after some one hasn't laid for a while, then starts back up...

I got 8 eggs today!

Florus is not doing any better. In fact his head at some points was completely upside down. I am not allowing him to jump up or down, trying to keep him inactive. I put heat in his coop tonight because temps are supposed to drop below freezing, mid to upper 20s. I might just go ahead and leave him and Beulah locked in for a week. The other girls, let them run around with Rod, though they've been sticking pretty close to where Florus is. He has a wide dish to get his water and food out of, and he is managing that. Trying to give him the poly is so hard, because he is fighting me on it. AND then he's stressed, so his head turns upside down again... GAH! SO hard to see him this was.

On a good note. Beulah's egg are all developing good. 3 are a day ahead of the other 3. Looking good. 5 are faverolles eggs, 1 is a welly egg I think. I have not marked the day they are due. BUT I think we are on day 4, maybe 5.

I am going to go down to bed and watch some Jersylicious because I am disturbed. LOL

I've seen a blood smear a few times, but I always thought that it was because the egg in question was bigger than the hen could actually normally lay.

We spent a very quiet day here. Gave the DDs easter baskets and since they don't require the frills, just handed over the candy to DH and DS. Didn't do anything else from there, but sit around watching hulu. I was hoping that not being too active would help in kicking this illness, but I don't think it did. I just can't shake this cough and sinus thing. DH, DD2, and even my mom when she called told me that I was breathing really heavy. I didn't realize it at all, but I can tell you that I do have a bit of a wheeze when I breathe. Man, I just want this crap gone.

Anyway, the chickens had a great time running around all day. They were super digging the compost and leave piles. Our girls gave up 15 eggs for the day. Going to have to start selling them again now that we're getting a dozen or more a day.
