Criptoe and her half silkie babies. One is starting to get lacing in the wings. How weird!
He's growing his crest back in real nice since Fritz no longer lives in the same coop. The girl, she's hiding, her's is full and nice.
The only offspring I have left from Mr. Fluffers and one of the GLW girls. How's that for lacing huh? She's almost POL.
Beulah, faverolle hen... too much black in her feathers.
And last but not least, Skeeters babies. No poopy butt problem with the one anymore either. She hasn't taken them out of the run yet, today was the first time they were out of the summer coop area. They are going up and down on their own now too. 9 days old.
Awwwww! <3
OOOhhh on another happy note I am all but thru enrolling for my Doctorate program !!!!! I cant wait to start back in december ...

Hi all..

been a real rough few days here- I am exhausted but I really needed to talk to Robin- and tada, here she is!

My daughter has been seizing really bad, and had an allergic reaction to the med they gave me to give her by injection and couldnt breathe. It was horrible scary, and then she seized again on Sunday and again this evening.. it is wearing me out.

At work I got the email to cut everyones hours and drop a day for everyone. And I did it- for everyone but myself. Made me feel like a real jerk. I took a cut earlier in the summer and went from forty hours to 24-32 and I just cannot effectively supervise two departments on any less. But I feel really badly doing it to people.

took my daughter to the audiologist on Friday. she needs hearing aids *not Kay- its Tiff who cant hear* but insurance only pays just over half, saw the doctor today. She has to have a battery of tests- including a cat scan and a balance test. that is in Novi- and its the day after opening day/ My husband will have the good vehicle out by Robin, hunting- so I have to reschedule it. My van wont make it to Novi.

its cold and rainy...thank goodness for the birds (especially Bird- lol) Bird yells at me like a spoiled brat when I go out there- tells me all about the indignities she has endured, how she has had to peck through leaves ALL day, and how bugs are scarce, and there are no real good goodies hiding out there anymore.
The quail are supposed to hatch in two days. I have no idea where I am going to put them.

HEY ROBIN- guess what I rescued that someone had THROWN away? It was in a plastic container, taped up, on top the trash can.
A cane toad.
Someone must have bought it so they could lick it but didnt want to take care of it .

Cute pictures being posted. I love chick pics!

Robin, Im so sorry about your turkey! And for the tom who must be lonely. Can he hang out with your other pair or will they fight?

Oooooooh, cane toad! neat.....

Okay, so now I'm worried. The little cat has made friends with DH and we both really like her. However, she can't be house cat 'cause we have four big dogs who wouldn't like that (yes, they are house dogs). So now I'm worried about her staying outside by herself even though she's been around for a couple of weeks. But with all the coyotes, etc., an outside cat will not last long. I'm wondering if I can get the goats used to her and then lock her in the barn with them at night. Am I totally off my rocker??? hmmmmm....
I dunno, we had a cat that lived in the barn with goats, chickens, and a bucket calf. He could get out easy though. He just slept in the rafters and when we needed to feed him he came in the mud room, ate, then left. I don't know about getting the goats used to her though. Ours have lived with the same cat for four years and still find him baffling. That weird "meow" noise just throws them off, then they follow him around and scare the jeepers out of him.

We are going to my Great Grandmothers memorial service tomorrow... I painted my long thick nails that I inherited from her in her honor... pink, just the color she would have picked (actually it is called Huston We Have A Purple... but it is pink) (Silver you would be proud) I still have to pick out my sons outfit, but he looks cute and dapper in anything!

Nugget is back in the garage. He is not balancing very well (if at all) with his wry neck. So i hold him up so he can eat and drink, I give him his vitamins... Poor guy... My mom said to put him out of his misery...

I have not given up hope yet. I am hoping it is like bells palsy... stress induced. I have removed him from all the other chickens and gave him a special chicken neck massage. He has trouble reaching a spot on his chest to clean his feathers so I helped him with that... he really enjoyed that. However, it looks like his oil gland is in need of some attention. I am sure he can't reach it, so his bum is pretty oily. I might have a house chicken yet. A "special" one...

Everyone else is doing really good

I haven't caught up on all the posts that have been made since last I posted, but I will do that soon(ish). I just wanted to pop in and say that 26 hrs now, after pipping, chick #1 is out and doing fine (as far as I can tell). Very slimy and funny looking little thing, but beautiful, too. I think his/her new skin parents will be very happy with him/her. He/she is very tiny, and I can't really tell what color it is...too wet to tell really. But...I'm very happy (and so relieved) that he/she is here, and is alive and okay (was getting very scared after 24 hours and nothing happening).

5 little toes and none of them are curled (thank you, Lord)...nothing extra hanging out anywhere that I can tell (was nervous after all I've been reading here on this site that he/she would pop out with 2 heads or something else!)

2 more pips now (one of them just now happened and the other one ...don't know when it happened)

going to catch up on posts now.
Congrats!

About the dirty feet...What kind of bedding do you use? I've always used newspaper with some prairie hay (once they're old enough they won't choke or mess up their legs) on top for traction and never had a problem, and I *usually* have at least one feather footed chickie. But maybe wood chips would be better, so they could kick them over the poop.......

How many chicks do you have and what size is the brooder? Maybe if you could separate the feather foots into a different brooder, where they would have some extra space, they could stay cleaner?

I don't really know though, sorry......
Tiny taking her bath tonight with her rotten little self ... she took a key off my pc keyboard I dont think she ate it it is much too big but i do not know where she slung it too ,... i threatened to ship her to MI lol
Awwwww!

So just finished reading about cane toads. Did you know they will eat 'small pets'? Run, girls, run - here come the toads
lau.gif

How was your Orientation and first couple of days, Fuzzy? New jobs are always fun and stressful.
Small animals? Gah, now I can't stop thinking about toads eating hamsters.

Thank you for the advice. There are 4 chicks in the brooder at the moment. I still have the one that hatched 12 hours ago in the incubator because there are wide open pip holes in the other eggs and I don't want to kill them off when I open the lid to get chick #1 out.

Anyway...the brooder is about 4 x 5 and 3' high...plenty of room, they're just messy little things lol

Also...if someone could please tell me how to multi-quote that would really help. I hit the back button to catch a quote and it erases whatever I have typed here. Thankies!!

Robins gonna be a toad-licker...nah nah nah nahhhh nahhh...maybe we can get her a spot on Honey BooBoo...

Im home because my daughter seized again. The doctor told me to quadruple her seizure medication. Lets see what happens now.

Guess what? Right before Kaylas seizure, she called me- and the quail eggs that I was going to put in lockdown TONIGHT? Hatching. three were being rocked and rolled all over the place, poor things. I had Kayla take them off the turner.

They look fine. :)

Early birds.

Well I'm happy that you're home to see the hatchings (Congrats!)...but I'm sorry it wasn't under better circumstances; will continue to pray for Kayla.

I need help please, I'm slightly flipping out and I stopped looking in the bator due to fear. Another chick hatched and left behind this hunk of yellow goopy gunk inside the shell - what is that stuff??? Also, this chick has a little "bloop" of pink down near it's belly, is that blood and what do I do?? The first chick might have it too but the eggshell is turned in a way I can't see and so is the chick's belly.

I would say it is part of the yolk left behind. I don't know for sure though.

Isn't that a bad thing?? I thought they were supposed to absorb that before they came out? Also, he/she/it is stomping all over the other eggs like Godzilla - that okay too?

[Edit] walks away from bator again in a poor attempt at good behavior.

GAH, yes it's hard when it's my first hatch and I just want everything perfect. :( Grown woman acting like a kid!

thats just nasty yuck- part yolk, part albumn. Raw bellybutton on the baby- dont do anything. I cant remember exactly what causes it- but I will find out and tell you. No stress. Sticky chicks? Right. Drying crusty and looking wet even when dry?
