FYI: Poultry fencing @ Lowes

I called Lowes customer service and asked if it was a mistake. The woman said no, they're seasonal items and that the price was correct. I bought all 11 rolls they had in stock of the 24"X50' of 2" hex chicken wire for $1.44 each. I'm going to use some of it as garden trellis for my beans and cucumbers. The rest I will share for what I paid if anyone in Jacksonville Florida needs it.

Just throwing this out there. poultry netting/chicken wire is meant for keeping chickens in and not predators out. Anything from a coon on up will have no problem tearing through chicken wire if they choose to. Your best bet for predator control is welded wire. I've already seen chickens take from a coop that had chicken wire on it. Not only did they rip a hole in it to get in, they ripped another hole in the other side to get out. Every chicken was ripped into tiny pieces. Everything pointed to a coon sized animal.

Sorry to hear of your loss. I do agree that chicken wire is weak. We use both chicken wire and welded wire. At our place the chicken wire is for aerial protection. Welded wire and Great Pyrenees for the ground varmints.

Currently I have 3' chicken wire around the coop for modified "free range". Yes I have lost chickens in the past year. But nothing points to a coon, since the chickens just 'disappeared' and were never seen again. One at a time. I have accepted that as the drawback of chicken raising and just replace as necessary. They have a sturdy wooden coop to go into at night. I am just 'upgrading' my fence to 4' and with metal T-stakes instead of wooden.

I have had no problems with dogs(KNOCK ON WOOD!), except the two small ones next door that dug UNDER the fence that borders their yard and my chicken yard and worried/pulled feathers out of a couple of my hens but didn't cause any deaths. THAT hole has been fixed with concrete blocks!

My coop will be all hex chicken wire with an added layer of welded wire on the bottom 4 feet, 2 feet of skirt wire around the perimeter. I hope to add a solar hot wire system in the near future. I have 2 dogs that take care of the cats, squirrels, and any other unfortunate animal that wanders onto the property.

LOVING Lowe's right now I brought home 4 rolls of 4' x 150' 1" poultry netting for 19.84 ea. and 4 rolls of 4' x 50' vinyl welded 2x3 for 16.10 ea. I didn't realize the vinyl stuff was 2x3 openings until I got home Oh well, what a deal!

You're more than welcome! We finished the fence today & my EE has already flown over it. She just flies out & in at will, but I had SOME hope the 4' would stop it. Oh well......

At the hardware store, I found that the 6' T-posts were as cheap as the 4' T Posts, which were out of stock anyway. So I wound up with a 3.5' fence and fenceposts about a foot taller than the fence. After putting up the fence around the garden last year, the chickens would sometimes get in. I added a few fishing line strings between the tops of those posts. Getting a little more barrier (Especially of a material the chooks can't see!) seemed to keep them out of the garden. It's an approach I'll be trying again this year when we build a fenced (But not roofed) chicken run for daytime use.
