GAHHHHHH! What To Do For Car Sick Pup??

My boy Shepherd did it until he was a year old, and my new puppy did it until she was about 4 months old. I use a crate until they get over it and relax. Haven't ever had one that didn't out grow it, but I guess it's possible.

Also no heavy meals before travel, or give it an hour or two.

I've also given candied ginger to dogs that were queasy from medication and it worked really well. They were on a chemo drug that made them nauseous. It's just a piece of real ginger that was preserved with sugar. I think a puppy would probably only need one tiny piece, at least to start. I gave several pieces to a grown cocker spaniel. Grocery stores usually have it in the spices aisle. We take it ourselves if feeling queasy for some reason, too.

Before I knew about ginger, I also had a puppy that got car sick on rides. I tried to get him over it for few months, without any success. He eventually just grew out of it, shortly after he turned a year old.

don't feed the pup a few hours before traveling, and maybe even withhold water for an hour or two before.... take small short trips, regularly and she will grow out of it. Put a blanket or tarp down or something in the car, but eventually she will grow out of it, you'll just need to take her in the car really often.

*Disclaimer* I am NOT a vet! I have a degree in Animal Sciences from an accredited university, but I am NOT a vet. (However my husband IS a lawyer, so I now feel the need for disclaimers, lol). With that said, I have experience with a car-sick pup and this is my advice/somewhat educated opinion.

I have no idea if anyone suggested this yet, but Dramamine. My APBT was CONSTANTLY nauseous (turned out to be a food allergy), so car rides were horrific. One typical pill for my 55-60lbs girl was all it took. Plus, a bit of Benadryl (25mg at first, add more if larger dog or they keep waking up. Hard to overdose on it, so it's okay to be generous) to help her sleep through it if it was a long ride. My vet was the one who told me how to use all of these meds, so I feel comfortable using and recommending them. If you can get it done with some more natural, like peppermint tea (which I also use) or ginger ale/ginger snap/straight ginger (have used for myself mostly), then by all means use those! But, none of that was strong enough for my poor girl, so she had to be on the "hard drugs".

::prayers for your pup's tummy::

P.S. Might be a behavioral thing too, make sure to eliminate that as an issue. If you have questions, feel free to PM me.
