My 9yo is starting to raise chickens. She bought a splash Australorp (Uni) at our local rodeo in late July and is anxious for her to start laying. She rescued Berry, an "island chicken" (free range neighborhood chicken "mutt"), from dogs and is hoping to breed these two. She also saved two other chicks (Jaimie and Arrow) that the ag office was going to destroy because they had splay leg and weren't sold. She asked if she could try to help them and so they let her take them home, where they are quite strong and healthy now.
