Galvanized double walled Waterers leaking

Quote:
Nope, the problem was the way it was made, there was no way the rubber could ever be close to being pulled tight to the side & the hole thru the washer was too big. The new galvanized waterers are very cheaply made compared to 15 years ago & rust thru in a year.

You could do some checking and find out if it was made in CHINA!!!!!, that's my guess.

There's your problem I think. I've got one of their Harris Farms waterers and was not impressed. It doesn't leak but I'm not impressed with the way it's made. I am not surprised that they might have seam leaks in some of them.

FWIW, the little rubber seal is not necessary to keep the waterer from leaking once you have the top back on properly. I managed to lose one off of one of my Little Giants (my preferred brand of double wall founts) and could not find a replacement for the longest time. I put my finger over the hole while I was filling it, put the lid back on and it worked just fine until the bottom finally rusted out.

I have the double walled waterer from TSC made by Harris Farms and it works great. The directions say NOT to carry it by the outside handle on the top. That could be what is damaging yours and causing it to leak. The inside bucket part has a heavy duty handle over it for carrying it when it's filled. After I put the filled inside bucket down on the heated base, I slide the outside part down and lock it in place. There's a gush of water that fills the pan and then it stops when the vacuum takes hold. You may have broken the seal if you carried it by the outside loop on the top.

Not the problem with mine, I am saying I can't carry it by the inside handle, because it would leak all the water out before I put the outside on.

Just asking... what is the handle for, if it isn't to carry the thing with??

rungirl is right -- the heavy duty handle on the bottom portion of the waterer is what you should carry it with to get it where you're putting it. The smaller handle on the top is for placing the top over the base. If you carry the filled waterer with the handle on the top part, you will ruin the waterer. The total weight of the waterer is being supported by that tiny little peg that you latch the top to the bottom with.

Cindy, you're mistaken. There is a valve on the bottom portion that does not allow water to flow into the open part until it's compressed by the top. That's why it gushes when you put the top down over the bottom.

Folks, don't carry these waterers by the handle on the top part of the waterer! Use the handle that is at the top of the base!

I hang mine by the handle at the top of the outer can and have for years. Never had one lose a seal because of it.

But not with the Harris Farms founts. They don't impress me as being as well made as the Little Giant waterers.

OK, ONE MORE TIME..............The instructions said it would leak a bit without the top on. It gushed without the top on, so much so that it would have all ran out very quickly BEFORE the lid was put on. It may have been OK after the lid went on, but since you are supposed to fill & carry the inner part, I took it back. It did not seal at all and I didn't like the construction.

My old one was a Little Giant, now I just have to find one and see how they are made.
