We have has a pair of Gambels quail for some time and unfortunately the other day we found that the hen had died. We have been looking for and for sale in our local area but no such look at the moment. But the lonely quail seems so distressed all alone calling a ll the time, is there any other bird/ quail anything really that he could cohabit with for company until we find a new mate? Please help

Did you find this little quail a companion yet? Do you keep any other type of quail at this moment? If you do, you could try to mix another species in for the time being to keep him company. You could bring him indoors and see if that helps his mood.

Quail are sociable birds and do need each other. Even if that "other" is a human.

Hiya thanks for the reply no we havent managed to find one as yet, we do keep standard hens in various breeds, bantams in various breeds and we have a trio of cornix quail ( or I think that's what they are called) little brown chunky guys!
We were debating trying a bantam in with him ?? He currently has a mirror, we have even contemplated buying a budgie or cockatiel but no body seems to have any answers?

Don't mix him with any chickens. Too much of a size difference, different feed needs and the ever present diseases that chickens carry that can kill quail. If he seems ok at this point, I wouldn't be too concerned. If you have a loner in your Coturnix quail, you could put one of them in with him, especially when winter comes. Good luck!

Thanks for the advice well try one of our other quail and keep looking for another Gambel hen
