Game bird crumble size

Where I am I get Nutrina brand. It is sold as a turkey/gamebird feed. 28%. Had problems with one bag (mold) in 3 years. Of course, that bad bag coincided with my coturnix hatch and I lost 2 of my 3 chicks. Grrrr.

We do have a lot of people growing turkeys so it is readily available. Sometimes it looks huge to me but I haven't had to grind it unless I have chicks.

Everyone has gotten a moldy bag of feed from time to time, or even created one. Don't even get me started on bugs!

This is something else, I can't put my finger on just yet, but a dime will get you a dollar, there is some kind of Chines ingredient "Wheat Gluten" that was hoped up with a cheep dose of nitrite (Melamine) maybe, and corn isn't all it's cracked up to be either. I will know more Monday. No Alex....it isn't salt

Wheat Gluten is just gluten from wheat - its what makes your bread hold together. It can be separated and sold separately. People add extra Wheat gluten in making breads at times. No big deal. They use it to hold everything together make the feed, then grind it to crumble, mash whatever. Its safe unless you happen to be allergic to wheat or are gluten intolerant. The grains Wheat - Barley - Rye have gluten in them, Oats is often contaminated by wheat and can have gluten from that contact. But no other grain has gluten in it.

Corn Gluten - now that one no company that uses it that I have contacted can explain just what that is to my satisfaction. No no its not the same as Modified Corn Starch is what I am told, but no explanation of just what it is. Corn does not have gluten or at least it is not supposed to. So just what is Corn Gluten?

Corn - Good question. We know they use genetically modified corn in animal feeds, its got to go somewhere. I imagine they use it in the GBF too, maybe there is a problem there. Some of these birds are very small. Maybe they are further modifying the corn?

I have noticed the blue flecks from time to time. I just thought they were the vit/min added that didn't get dissolved?

I have a small grain grinder, so I grind a little smaller for hatches, they seem to eat more.
joe - Hope something here helps with your questions Monday for a feed company.

Ok...I deserved that!

It isn't salt! I know that!

"but I will call and quiz Purina about it in the near future."

Where did that come from?

But copper, zinc in high dosages can be problems too....

I got two five pound bags of clumpy Manna pro a couple of months back. Threw it out in the compost pile. Would have taken it back but I don't go to Orscheln's often enough as it's out of my way. Should have called Manna Pro, I suppose.

What is the manna pro you use Rozzie? I have a Orschelns near by. I can find the purina non-med GBS, but only in 50 lb bags. Im feeling like it will be really old by the time its fed. Im thinking smaller bags of fresher feed would be a better deal. Bill

Bill,

The only Manna Pro I can get here is 24% starter. It's in little 5 pound bags & costs about $6-7. It definitely isn't cheap. Both TSC & Orscheln's here have it. I think the stuff my Orschelns had was really old, though. TSC at least seems to have fresher food. They seem to carry more Game bird stuff here, too, not that it's much. (At least they have quail waterers...)

I recently have been able to get a store to buy big sacks of Purina for me. They charge only $15. I'm thrilled to get 30% (non medicated) for that price.

I am also still using up a bag of lower protein turkey starter someone gave me (22% or something like that). The coturnix roos are getting it. (Sorry boys...)
