Gander attacked, killed, and buried another gander?

This scares me so much..
What could be big enough to kill a full grown gander?? (besides a dog or coyote)
IS a fox really big enough to fight off a ticked off goose?? Heck, my goose beats ME up!
Would an owl, hawk be able to take down a goose??

The fox depends upon suprise If the gander knows he is there I bet on the gander. The same with the owl and the hawk. Most gamders are killed by surprise when in defence they can be nasty, but suprise is a great advantage.~gd

I'd say bobcat, that's exactly how the bobcat handled the carcasses when it wiped out my muscovy and geese flock. Several of the carcasses were covered up so good I could not find them until by smell several days later & the weeds were woven over so tightly over the carcasses.

The bobcat made really clean cuts on the flesh and small bones, as if a cookie cutter was used. if you see that, I'd say bobcat for sure...

My bets on a bobcat. One carried a Pekin gander of mine away but he struggled my neighbor said. One of my ganders? They would definitely have a difficult time with it. They would bury what they could take and come back later. A coyote could and would carry a gander off. A dog is more likely to play with it and kill it; not take the head. Dogs usually leave their kills where they lay.

Anything larger than a bobcat would have been able to carry a gander off. Please make sure that the rest of your flock is protected. The fact that this is the one that was taken could be pure coincidence. It could also be that it was separated from the flock and the bobcat saw that and snatched it. Now that it knows it can get a meal at your place, it WILL be back..

Good luck!

Laurie
