garden of feathers

I have feathers everywhere and no eggs, i thought chickens molted in the fall?

I hatched these chickens last April and they only layed for a few weeks before the winter came in and they packed up and hibernated. They have not started to lay again yet and now the garden is covered in feathers and i have scruffy birds with no neck or tail feathers. Is this normal?

Many times molting is a function of age, not time of year.
