I've been using the bucket and bag under the cone method. I have a 5 gallon bucket with a black trash bag in it. As soon as I have the bird's neck cut, I can pull up the bag and the bleed out is much cleaner. I also have the legs bungied together at the top of the kill cone. For me at least, the sharp knife just below the chin means a quick cut and a quick bleed.

Rinse, then into the scald pot.

I slaughtered 6 cornish x's for the first time last week. After much research and watching youtube videos I decided to do it with a hatchet. Chopping their head off with a hatchet is quick for the bird but its messy because the blood gets everywhere. I know the cleanest and easiest way for some people would be to just put them in a cone and cut their jugular vein but for some reason I have a problem with that method.. I can't get myself to just cut away into the neck like that.. although its humane, it seems a little disturbing to me. I prefer one quick whack but that's just me.

This is the way we do it, too. Slit the throat and the bird bleeds out. Very little pain because of oxygen deprivation to the brain. No flapping and trauma to bird or meat or human when they're in the cone.

Me too. In the past i tried to slaghter some hens few times with knife and i always ended up feeling sorry for them and let them back with the flock (i started keeping chickens for their eggs).
But nothing escapes my garden scissors
