I work at Wal-Mart...that's probably not the reason they were confused. Most people purchase the plants that are already growing...not seeds and again, usually not at this time of year.

You mean to tell us that had they been asked a few weeks ago, they would have known??

people up here in the northern part of the country are still buying seeds and my wife just planted cucumbers and squash seeds 3 days ago..

and does your walmart sell carrot sets and beet sets and radish and bean and pea sets ?? our walmart does not in our town..

More than likely yes, especially since the stock is rotated and moved around the store relentlessly. When it is time for the next "crop" to be brought up, the old crop is sold at clearance prices. ALSO, there have been several new positions opened up and people simply do not know what all is entailed in the gardening area lately.

In the south...the only thing you can buy at Wal-Mart RIGHT NOW is tomato plants, again...already half grown and flowers. Before and during the planting season, you are able to purchase, flower seeds, carrot seeds, pea seeds, green beans, corn...even cucumber and squash. Along with several more, I'm certain, however I'm only a cashier that sees the items come through.

Ah. I see where the real issue is now...and it doesn't seem to be Wal-Mart.

I live in the south and you can't buy seeds here this time of year either. Never mind if you want to plant a fall garden. I usually buy extra seeds and dry seeds from my vegatables for the fall. I guess Walmart figures if you can't plant in the north you cant in the south either.

You're not alone...I live in Oregon and am just finally getting my garden in...Have a few plants, but am going to try to start some seeds. Just one of those years it took awhile to get it together. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I'll get some yummy produce.

Too bad about the Wal-Mart kids. I'm hoping my kids are learning what it means to produce your own food. We don't have room right now to raise meat birds, but they do know that when we are able to move to a bigger place, we'll start doing that. As well as, our own other meat too.

Good luck with your garden!!

i'm guessing the younger set will just text each other and that will magically produce food?????

who's buying seeds??? me me me! i'm still buying seeds! are you kidding? i'm stocking up for later planting AND i'm sick of those stupid vine borers getting my darn pumpkins so an old timer told me to plant LATE

and so i am

so i'll walk past the mumbly teens who work there (wont look you in the eye, wont actually speak when you ask a question, look confused a lot...) and walk around until i find the seeds.

then i'll pay in cash - and send them into fits by giving them exact change.. or say $11 for a $6 total and watch their heads explode when they cant figure out to just hand me back a $5 bill (the poor little gal at dairy queen still cant get this one....)

anywhoo - i'm sure they'll figure it out.

What makes me glad about the human race is the capacity to learn new things when the knowledge is necessary. A lot of us raised chickens from little chicks (or even incubated and hatched them!) after reading books and answering questions on the Internet. We might not have raised chickens ever before or had someone around in real life to guide us.

If there really are some teens out there who don't know plants come from seeds, I'm sure they could figure things out if they really had to.

So... OP... Were you able to find seeds anywhere else?

I keep planting all season, so I have a longer harvest. I too sometimes buy seeds at this time. Walmart around here sends there seeds back early. Sometimes you can get lucky on a website if you can't find any local.
