This is it, in a nutshell. The government will take care fo them and they wont have to worry.

Its been predicted for a century now. Read Aldous Huxley sometime.

The Chicken Lady asked:
So... OP... Were you able to find seeds anywhere else?[

Yes, he finally found some at the local feed/farm store.

Actually, we aren't supposed to plant here until after June 15th because of the very real potential for frost. I'm just later than usual due to "life". How much of a garden I get will depend on how early the first frost is.. it can vary by a couple of months here so.... I still have a chance of getting some vegies.

By the way... this post is in no way bashing Walmart or people under 20. It just points out how far our country has gotten from the self sufficiency of most of our grandparents.

I do have hope for our future generations partially because of the internet... kids are always searching for things and they might come across a great site like BYC or her sister sites and have the curiosity to learn some new things!

Plus... most of the people on BYC are teaching their children some form of self sufficiency... there is hope!

my wife does.. do you live in a southern climate? then you do not know what it is to lose 2 acres of potatoes because you have a killing frost back to back on august 8 and 9 ..

we have from may to september to get our gardens in and harvested,,,if we are lucky..

yeah, we must be pretty dumb to be able to do that..

Ah. I see where the real issue is now...and it doesn't seem to be Wal-Mart.

Thats weird, In Australia seeds from the supermarket such as Bunnings Warehouse(Hardware and Gardening) and Kmart are sold all year, they don't take them away just because it may not be the season for them, They are available all year round. I find it really strange that any shop would put them away because they aren't in season, Really how much space can seed packets take up? and wouldn't it be smarter to leave them there even if it isn't the season so people can buy them because the store would still make money off them.

We found out that Walmart (the one nearest us) doesn't sell seeds ever anymore. I have no idea why. That is probably part of why the employees didn't know what my hubby was talking about... they've not seen them sold there.

none the less, they still should have known that seeds produce plants.. even if walmart did not sell them.. I wonder, do they know where babies come from????

That's because the store doesn't quite own the seeds. They can send them back to the seed company for a full refund of what doesn't sell, but they only have so long to do it in. Same idea with nursery plants, they have to put them in the trash and say they're destroyed to get credit. For years gardeners have checked next to the dumpsters outside garden stores as some managers will set plants next to them rather than kill the plants.

Im a teen and just planted pumpkins, tomatoes, red peppers, onion, brocoli, carrots, lettuce all on my own my parents didn't even ask me I just felt like it.

That is just hard to believe!! I can't imagine. Don't they teach this in like kindergarten even if you haven't learned it by then??? I know my DD has come home from school with lots of started seedlings we plant.

That is just like one of the basics in life....

I find it hard to believe that the kids actually didn't know that plants come from seeds. They were probably just hormonal teens who were in their own fog. I have two hormonal teens and if it isn't about music... they just don't know. or don't care.

However, they are smart kids and if we needed to learn how to grow our own food to survive... I am sure they could. Kids are different today... but EVERY generation of kids is different.

I just got through reading Brave New World, btw and honestly, the savage was just as bad as the civilized people. imo That man just had a poor image of human nature.
