Garter snakes

Found a cute garter snake, roughly a nickel size diameter and a foot and half long, looks fully matured, at my mother's house, all curled up and found out it had a smashed, chewed up tail end, maybe roughly a good four inches was sitting there, all chewed, scales ripped from the muscles.

So Dad picked him up to the next door neighbor, abandoned house across the street and let him go. he said they can regrow another tail while I say, it will die eventually and can not regrow a tail like a lizard.

So would this snake be alive and regrowing a tail or die from blood loss or infection?

It depends on how much was damaged. If it's vent is still intact then it might survive. It won't grow back though.

Garter snakes will not grow new tails; if their tale is damaged it will heal as a blunt tip. I have seen them.

I would not put high odds on that snake surviving; it's now an easy target to predators and infection. Maybe, though.
