Gasping chick... Solution found!

I came across this post while trying to figure out why my chick with an injured leg was suddenly gasping. The injury happened when my three year old snuck into the grower and accidentally shut the door on her. I figured it was worth a try but I didn’t have yogurt, so I went with garlic, probiotic powder, water and sugar. It seems to help a bit, I thought she stopped altogether but today it’s returned. How long is it ok to give this mixture? Any other advice? Thank you!

Hello everyone.

I bought six OEGB chicks from TSC on Thursday afternoon. The tiniest one in the clutch was gasping... every single breath, gasping. Although it was still eating and drinking and pooping.

I was very worried and came here to read all I could on "Gasping Chick". I searched for it in this forum. I read all of them. I was saddend to know that most have not made it.

But I didn't give up... and what worked for mine, I hope will work for yours too.

All I did was add sugar to the water. The next day... No more gasping! He still breathes just a little bit different from the others, but the gasping has totally stoped.

So please. If you need something to do that might help your gasping chick, try the sugar water. I put it in with them all and so they all got it, healthy or not. They all seem more happy and spritely now and even the little one is doing great.

Good luck!
Just got chicks from TSC, opened the box and one was gasping with eyes closed so pretty much expected it to die within a few hours.... tryed the sugar water thing an it started to look better. Gave a second dose a few hours later an it was running and eating with the others ( next day still a occasional little chirpy cough that's going away). I've had chickens for 30 years and I've never heard this trick. Thank you, it probably saved my little speckled Sussex.
