I’m trying to gather eggs for incubation and it’s still in the 30’s here. How often should I check for eggs? I guess what I’m asking is how long can an egg stay viable in this weather?

Fertility goes way down when it is cold I would wait a while. I am incubating right now but the fertility is HORRIBLE I am finally getting some good ones when it started to warm up

I’ve gathered eggs over a month ago for hatching from unheated, uninsulated coop when it was 20s and 30s, I’ve got almost 100% hatched almost 2 wks ago. As long as the eggs have not been frozen they should be fine.

Interesting then I just have really bad luck with eggs

I was surprised too, I didn’t expect them to be good at all, but a friend has room in incubator so I put in 15 eggs, 14 hatched, one was fully developed but did not pipped. Three days ago we set another batch, we’ll see what happen this time.

The more frequently you can gather the better.
After checking yolks for fertility while cooking, to make sure everyone is active',
I start gathering a few times a day and stashing them for hatching.
Keeps 'em cleaner.
