Gave my bird away, then got him back... Now he looks different!!!

Thanks for asking. I couldn't see how taking off the spurs could aid in certain activities, either. I googled it and think I have a clearer idea, but it's certainly not something that I would have thought of on my own. If anything, before I looked it up I would have thought removal of spurs would be a sure indication that a bird wasn't intended for a specific purpose.

Did they take the spurs off completely, or just trim them? That would make a difference. It could be that the spurs were just too long, and needed to be trimmed.

Personally, I don't like the dubbed look either, but I don't think it is cruelty or anything like that. And that boy did have huge wattles!!

You're a chicken? OMG! So tell me . . . does it hurt when you lay an egg? Do you resent it when people eat your eggs? Why do you sit on golf balls, or are you one of those non broody types? And tell me, what is your favorite treat? I'd ask my own hens all this if I could, but none of them have the grasp of the human language quite like you do. Where did you learn to type, anyway?

I'm sorry, but I have removed spurs completely before. I'm sorry but when spurs get to 2" long and impede walking...it's time to remove them.

They bleed, oh yes they bleed but better than tripping and breaking a leg or accidentally slicing open a hen.

You can use a potato to 'trim' them. Just cut the potato in half cross-wise, and 'screw' it onto the spur. Then just pull it off. The spur is similar to a toenail, so there is a part that is like a 'quick'. If you do it like this (the potato), it shouldn't bleed at all, and will be much shorter

I would wonder why a kid that age would be doing such things, and how he even knew about it. Apparently the mother wasn't aware.
