Hello from Western Australia (WA)!

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I had a few chooks as a kid. I think I remember how it all works! Or maybe its improved since then? That's what I'm here to learn :)

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Zero. Very disappointing, ha.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Impossible to be unhappy with a hen tucked under your arm. What's not to love ^_^

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
Been in seafood for years, currently retraining as a train driver. This new job comes with a massive pay increase I'm hoping to use to pivot into semi-rural semi-retirement as soon as possible.

I'm interested in getting into medium scale/ hobby farm/ semi-commercial chicken and egg production for modest financial gain- have there been any notable threads or discussions on that particular topic you could all point me towards? As I'm in my preplanning years I'm keen to research what others are doing in this field, get my head arounds feasibility, needs etc. I'm looking to combine chickens with small scale orcharding- got some ideas about pest-exclusionary fruit arbours incorporating a dedicated flock and beehive system. To that end I'm interested in learning specifically about jumbo coop construction and flock management, maybe a bit of the business side of things too. In saying all this I'd be starting small to begin with so there's a great deal the backyarders can teach me :)

So yeah, hook me up with your finest reading materials and resources recommendations!

Hello, Amy, and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
I'm afraid that BYC is geared towards the joys of owning chickens on a small non-profitable scale, not commercial. Commercial practices are not looked upon positively here as they are geared towards maximum productivity at a minimal cost to maximize financial gain. The vast majority of us want what's best for our flocks, not our wallets so very few, if any of us make any money.
