Get chickens, they said. They'll be a delight, they said. Think of the freshness and quality of the eggs, they said ...

hmm. I'll admit the above did turn out to be true, in addition to them being destructors of gardens, lazy at laying, freeloaders (something they didn't say)... ;-)

Joking generally, our first hens (Hylines/Isa Browns) were at end of useful cycle on a free range commercial paddock down the road, Kath and Kim, they gave us another 2 years of regularly laying and entertainment. Both died within a few months of each other, pretty much natural causes.

Our current two (and our Rooster, Jackie Chan) Kylie and Dannii, are young Australorps and doing my head in at the moment. I've posted a thread on this ...

Hubby and I bought our acreage in 2019, moving in just before Covid hit with a vengence and Australia locked down. Phew! We're differently engaged (I refuse to use the word retired), full time here on our little farm, with hazelnut and olive groves. SW of Western Australia, a little paradise.

Having a forum like this is very useful!

Cheers,
Cyn
