Geese & Duck People UNITE

I was looking at the ALBC site again, thinking about breeds of ducks. I had a pair of Saxony, but the hen was killed. I have some more Saxony eggs on order when they start laying. I am also waiting on Toulouse eggs. I had never really looked at the exhibition Rouens before. Those are adorable!! I have been thinking about the Appleyards, too. Do you think I could have too many large breeds of duck??

I have developed a real like for the Calls, too. I have a Butterscotch Call drake and a Saxony drake that are both batchelors and hang out together. The Call looks like he could be the son of the Saxony. It is too cute!! I am going to have to get a picture soon.

Runners and Khakis are also good ducks, but the ones I had didn't have as much personality as my Calls and Saxony have. What about Swedish?? How do I decide???? Too many breeds look like too much fun. I never thought I would be a waterfowl person - but I am. I was even thinking about how nice your Ruddys look, and do I have room for them, and OH MY!! I know I don't have a set up for wood ducks and Mandarins, but I think I could make one in the next year or so. That would be too much fun!!!

DeAnna,
Well, I don't think you can have too many ducks, but that's me!
The only thing I would say is you could end up with too many drakes.
We seperate all our breeds during breeding season and don't have any problems with too many drakes then. During the off season, we run them all together and don't have any trouble with the drakes all together.

I am sure I can toss a few ex. rouen & appleyard eggs in with them dewlap eggs this spring!!! Boy, at this rate, your gonna need a bigger box!!!!!

I love ducks and geese. I used to live actross from a huge pond that had. mallards, swans, and canadian geese. I used to feed them and the ones that where injured I used to care for then re release. I am buying cayuga eggs next month so I am happy that I will have my own to keep. muscovies are next on the list

The only issue with having too many different breeds is keeping the right mates together. I have 3 breeds of geese, so in order to get purebred offspring I have to re-arrange the flocks and put some in pens. Otherwise the Embdens would breed everything becasue they are the largest males.

The same will be true with ducks.

I think Saxony's are gorgeous. But, I hold my Silver Appleyards are the most beautiful ducks I've ever seen.

If I wanted ducks I think I would get silver apple yard Does any one have pictures of them? I also might get some moscovies and kaki cambels.

Go to Mothergoose's website. The link is under her name. She is a topnotch person to deal with.

I really need to go out and take some current photos of everybody. Hopefully once the weather turns a little nicer, I can do that...but till then there is a appleyard photo on our website...not a great photo, but nobody ever wants to stop and say "cheese"!
