ive been thinking about geese and i want some one day.....
and i have questions!

Do they fly if you have them in a nice fenced in yard? or do you have to have them in a cage with a wire roof?

how do you sex them when theyre full grown? (the white embed ones)

are they really noisey like guineas or are they kinda just like a roosters crow? (volume wise)

are the white embed good mothers?

do they go broody?

Do a search on this site for mega info! Just hit the search button and enter a couple of key words i.e geese noisy or geese best breed.
There is sooooo much good info here!
In a nutshell: Geese are noisy at times-they sound alarms and therefore are great watch dogs. Some geese breeds have friendlier personalities than others (but breeding and gentle treatment are to be considered). They are very hardy and disease resistant if they have some shelter, grazing, are not over crowded and a source of clean water. They are BEAUTIFUL and respond to kind treatment with affection and loyalty. They are VERY unhappy kept alone (they are flock animals) and you should keep at least a pair. In my experience they do not bond to other poultry (as adults), but tolerate them well (unless breeding, as would be expected). They are excellent parents. Hope you do some research and are able to acquire some geese!

AWW i love the sebastpols (sp) theyre adorable but EXSPENSIVE!

OH and thank you i will do some searchin on here

Let's see. Flying shouldn't be much of an issue with Embdens. They are generally too big. Although my African females all fly.

My males "fly" about three inches off the ground.

I don't know about sexing them. My African males are just larger and more powerful than my females, plus they have larger knobs. I would assume that Embdens are the same, the males just look more male.

My geese aren't anywhere near as loud as the guineas. It isn't a constant noise, but they do sound the alarm if anything comes into their pasture.

I have no clue about their parenting ability.

Enjoy researching them.

I'm poking around try to decide on another breed to add in the spring.

here's my $0.02:

****nope on the flying.... a couple of my mutts have gotten up on their toes while flappin'.. but they are pretty heavy. our embden gander couldnt fly with a frequent flier card and a boarding pass.

****hee hee hee the goose is the one sitting on the nest and the gander is the one that is trying to kill you if you get close
;-)

just kiddin' we were able to tell by behavior - the females were more 'demure' and hung back and the males were more 'chargin' right at you'

are they really noisey like guineas or are they kinda just like a roosters crow? (volume wise)
*** i'd say noiser than rooster but not howler monkey-ish as guineas. they are GREAT watchdogs and alert at... well... anything. they whole 'polite little honk' is a myth - they have a metallic quality to their voices that carries a LONG way... and can be very loud. but you'll always know if something comes in your yard! they arent constantly screaming tho...

are the white embed good mothers?
*** we have a toulouse momma... and our embden momma had a failed nest (not her fault). i think geese in general are great parents

do they go broody?
*** yep! and there's no stopping them. they make huge nests...and we made sure they had a nearby kiddie pool. to get up and take a quick bath.

i love our geese - they are great lawn mowers, i think they are fun, and are beautiful! on the down side, they are big poop machines, can be loud, and our gander is incredible aggressive...and i've got the scar on my arm to prove it.

good luck!

hey soccer mom!
:)

Yea clear as mud lol if i just get a pair from somewhere will they be alright together in my back yard? ofcourse with a house and everything my fence is a nice wood fence they wouldnt be able to get through it im just worried about getting over it. it liks 7 foot tall.......

OH and does anyone have pictures of a male and of a female like a full body shot? of the embden geese?

and what are those lobe things under theyre belly?
