I plan to dose my chicken flock with Wazine-17 wormer tomorrow. I found some roundworms in a chicken's poop & know I need to dose everyone. Do I need to dose the geese? I have a pair of Embdens who free-range all around the yard all day. They periodically come back to the area by the pens to eat & drink throughout the day. Should I keep them confined to their pen with Wazine-free water all day? They won't like it but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

This is just my opinion, but I would not dose the geese. They have very high body temps (105 F) and that prevents them from coming down with a lot of illnesses that chickens and turkeys get. I wouldn't do it because I doubt it is necessary.

Roundworms are, well, in everything that lives next to the dirt

unless your birds are showing signs of stress, not laying, pale combs/faces, or abnormal poops, I wouldn't worm. I've never wormed my birds, but I live up north where we get at least two good hard freezes in the winter.

I'd wait for other responses and not take my advice at face value . . . except for the part about not medicating a healthy bird and possibly causing trouble where there was none

Here in South Florida the yard is like a big petri dish filled with all sorts of microscopic life. I try to keep everyone healthy enough to resist being adversely affected by such things. But occasionally I know they need a little help from a bottle. When I see roundworms waving "howdy!" to me from somebird's poop I know that there must be others harboring similar company. All my birds mingle & eat & drink from each other's dishes and there's not much I can do to change that.

Each morning I let the ducks & geese out of their houses & pens and they roam the yard all day. They have pans of water they drink from as well as their kiddy pool. And the chickens also drink from those pans, especially the bantam flock who roost in the trees & roam the yard all day.

I cannot confine the Khaki Campbell ducks to their pen (they fly over the fence) but I could keep the Pekins & the geese confined, with Wazine-free water for the day. But then the bantams wouldn't get the Rx they need if they drink from the ducks' pans.

I could instead let the ducks & geese out of their pens, and just let them drink from the pool all day. And put the Wazine-treated water pans IN the pens and close them off from the ducks & geese for the day. That way the ducks & geese would have NO access to Wazine and also wouldn't be stressed by being confined all day.

That is, unless it would be advisable to dose the ducks & geese with Wazine, which was my original concern. I haven't started the treatment yet because I've been sick inside with a bad head cold. Any more imput would we welcomed on this matter, thank you!

Dosing by putting medication in water isn't really the best with waterfowl. Could you instead use Ivomec 1% for cattle and swine, and just give them a few drops in their mouths with a small syringe? That's what I've been doing with all our waterfowl two times a year. (this is our first full year)

edited to add: If you'd like me to post links to info, I will do so... tired and lazy at the moment
