Geese with kids?

Sebastopols are wonderful. They have a great temperament. My son loves his, and enjoys doing showmanship classes with his female Marlene!

Here is a pic of Marlene with my Aunt( not a bird person) waiting for the class to start. Marlene happily waited her turn, she is a great Goose ambassador! If you say her name to her, she happily answers back!

The Sebastopols are great, they let you know when anything is out of sorts. They return to their barn everynight, all you have to say is "go to bed geese" And if anything comes into the yard that shouldn't be, you know right away! I was a little unsure about them when we got them, but am completely sold on them now. I highly recommend this breed!

Nope! and I blame most of it on the kids doing everything that one should not do around geese. Too Loud, too fast, and failing to even try to read goose bodys. They thought that since the geese didn't run and hide like the ducks did, that the geese wanted to be handled and petted. they would reach out to pet and find a goose attached to their hand. LOL Yep I know some kids can be trained to be around geese. They are your kids and your geese you pick who to train. You asked for advise and I gave you mine. BTW if a goose was broody I wouldn't let a kid get anywhere near her or her nest, these bites were given by just regular old geese trying to protect themselves..

No offense, but I am wondering how a child would possibly know any better about how to interact with another species unless they were actively being taught, and somewhat redundantly, by an adult? I don't know what was really happening in this situation, but it sounds a bit like throwing a kid in the deep end of the pool and then blaming them for drowning. Ha, Ha, they got bit? Really? I must be missing something, LOL, too sleepy maybe.

On another note, I do thank you and everyone for your advice and breed suggestions. I think I will take some time to go meet some geese, and maybe put this off til next year. Seems about 50/50 on the good vs. bad experiences. I'm more of a 60/40 girl at least.

I raise Cotton Patch geese and they are the friendliest goose I've ever seen. Even during breeding season their aggression barely goes up a notch and that is only if you try to stick your hand under the goose while she's on her nest. Otherwise I've never had any aggression. They do get annoyed at the chickens during breeding season and I've had them rip out feathers from the hens who got too close to the nest. Right now I have an adult male with a broken leg. He lets us pick him up and hold him while rewrapping his broken leg and doesn't bite though he's obviously in pain. I'd say that's about as aggression free as you get. And I totally trust the geese around kids. This isn't the best pic (wish I had one of them petting him), but the kids (including my 1 yr old cousin) were in the goose pen petting and entertaining the goose with the broken leg and nobody got bit. And yes I mean entertaining. He enjoyed the attention and would honk his head off whenever anyone tried to leave the barn lol.

Cotton Patch, Pilgrims and the Sebs.

Yea and this was their first time ever around a goose! They were terrified to begin with especially with his honks echoing in the barn lol!!
I have a bunch of info about the breed on my website if you want to check it out.

My Toulouse birds are very nice and have never chased anyone. The most they have ever done to me during the breeding season is give me a quick pinch if I lift them off their nest, and it's never left a bruise. And mine were never imprinted on. I do not know how well they would protect something, but if they thought that the ducks were like family I'm sure they would protect them like they do each other, which is very well. I do not know if the production Toulouse that you can get from hatcheries are the same, but I would hope so. You could try asking someone or looking around for a site that has a good description of them. I would definitely say Sebbies are amazing too. My friend has one and he is just a sweetheart!
