Gender and Breed? --- picture heavy

i have a road island red and i got it on may 17th or 18th at like a week old and he just got his gross extra skin under his chin, so probably not a male if it is a rir

Are you sure? This is a picture of one of my EE pullets at 7-8 weeks of age. The pea comb is still flat. That last picture you posted of Speckles looks like a straight comb - if it is, in fact, a pea comb that is already growing tall at 5 1/2 weeks, than that chick would be a roo.

I was thinking the same thing as Andora - if the farm you bought the chicks from has "RIR's, black australorps, dominiques, barred rocks, and leghorns", than your chicks can't be EEs. Actually none of these breeds have pea combs.

Could they be RIR cockerels? I'm only familiar with what the pullets look like - maybe the cockerels are not as solid colored as the pullets. If not, then they may be RIR mixes.

Oops. If the dominques are true dominques and not barred rocks, than they have a rose comb. If your chicks do not have a straight comb, then maybe they are a mix with a RIR & dominique.

pretty sure it is a pea comb

it is not straight like the buff orpingtons i have
looks like a ridge down the middle with 2 very small ridges to each side of it

i got some updated photos this morning -- last chance before i take off to Pennsylvania for 2 weeks

i guess this makes Speckles 6 1/2 - 7 weeks old

looks like you have yourself a cute little mutt breed (I say this with care) I don't think it is RIR pure, but it sounds like RIRxDOM sounds most likely.

as far as the EE part goes, aren't EE's just a mutt (or mixed breed if you don't like the word mutt) as well, with some type of araucana/ameraucana in the blood line to give colored legs and colored eggs? just a thought though

honesty is the best policy

in my experience with dogs, mutts are the best breeds ---

now i just need to cross my fingers and hope it's a pullet instead of a roo --- still no waddles yet - but over the past week the comb has gone from a pale yellowish color to more of a fleshy pink color

Nice little mutt RIR mix and really - they lay like vending machines with clockworks. However, Speckles needs a much more manly name and won't be laying any eggs...

Sorry to be a nay-sayer, but that bird isn't a RIRxDom. It would have yellow legs if it was. That bird is more than likely a cross, but not those two breeds.

sounds good --- don't think i will bother changing the name though -- since "he" (i'm convinced now that it is a he) will likely be going to freezer camp in a month or 2

the other one from the same hatch has yellow legs - and similar colors - but is much smaller (i now think that "she?" is a bantam mix)
