Good evening! I am attaching some new additions to my flock. Their names are Dorothy, Blanche, Sophia, & Rose. I would like your opinions as to their breed & gender. I estimate them to be around 12 weeks old. My guesses are: Sophia- rooster & no idea on breed, Dorothy & Blanche- hens & pencil laced Wyandottes, Rose- hen & Rhode Island Red. Help a new chicken lady out!

So... I've already got 1 roo & 5 hens. Stan will make 2 roosters & 5 hens. I'm afraid this won't work. Any advice?
Well actually you probably shouldn't keep any roosters unless you plan to get more hens. You can pen one up and rotate them out, or pen them away from the hens. It just depends on how you feel about them and if you want to keep them. We eat extra or trouble making roosters here. So that's another option.

I'm pretty attached to my main man Charlie. I've had him since he was 2 weeks old. He does great with the girls, but I'll just have to see how it goes with Stan as he ages. AND eating him wouldn't be a problem ... it'd be the killing :(

It is something that still bothers me. If it doesn't than there's something wrong with a person I think. Killing an animal you raised shouldn't be easy.

I personally don't eat meat but my husband does. Knowing who he is eating can be a bit disturbing to me, but I know it had a good life unlike those bought in the store.
