Okay friends, so far I'm 3/5 boys, and I think Charcoal here might make it 4/5... Charcoal is about 4 weeks old and is the youngest (by a week) of the group of chicks. Dad is red orpington, mom is unknown but must be one of the following: silver-laced wyandotte, blue rock, rhode island blue, or lavender orp). Charcoal is the black chick that has some sort of barring or mottling on the chest. Comb isn't as red as the others, but seems large, and the wattles are red.

Is Charcoal a cockerel? And do you have any guesses as to what breed the mama might be? Thanks!

I think it’s a cockerel—so much red for 4 weeks old. Also, since he and his dad have a single comb then mom probably did too. I think rose comb is dominant over single. I’m going to guess she’s the lavender. That’s where the black could have come from.
I agree with this.

Thanks for you input, even though the answer I was going for was “no that’s definitely a girl!” 😂. Question about the breeding- would multiple babies with the same mama & papa look the same? I have a chick who is also out of the lavender orp hen, and that chick, while also black, is developing a copper or orange chest & neck (kind of looks like a Robin). It’s much brighter than this one and the color seems solid unlike this one. This is my first time hatching so I’m very new to chicken color & genetics amongst mixed breeds.

Not necessarily. The parents could be heterozygous for various traits that would then manifest in different ways in different chicks.

You probably won't understand more than a fraction of it. I *think* I'm up to understanding maybe 3/4 of it. :D

Here are a few articles to help you understand at least some of it:
