I need a little help please… I think I may have an unwanted rooster in my flock. Here are my signs of the “hen” in question:
- She is VERY large (2x the size): it may be the bread of chicken, but am unsure. I was given the chickens without knowing their age/background.
- I caught her standing on the back of another hen (but not completely mounted ~if you know what I mean~)
- She’s becoming a little more vocal, but not cock-a-doodle-doing
- The tail feathers seem a little larger (but may just be apportionment to her size???)
- I have a brooding hen (she is quite the grump when I come in, very protective)

But another interesting point: this same “hen” needs an apron (it’s on order). The other hens continue to peck at its back. Would hens do this if he was a rooster?

So what do you think? Is this enough info to make the call?

I have a hen who I would have thought was a rooster till she laid her first egg (she was also super dominate). Pictures will help get your a clearer answer!

I hope this helps. Any gueses to it's gender?

What breed do you think he is? I was guessing a buckeye, production, or rhode island.
