3 1/2 weeks ago I hatched out a gigantic pile of chicks, including some mystery chicks from others and a few of my own mutts. Also took in extra hatchery chicks from another byc'er. The males will go elsewhere in a week or two. Most of the boyos are starting to become obvious but these two have me guessing.

Chick #1 is a hatchery salmon favorelle and is feathering in with boy coloration, so I just assumed it was a boy. Was sexed by McM as a female and two were sent to the original orderer. I was mentally putting it in the boy pile except when I found out that the OTHER sexed favorelle is also feathering with boy colors. Then I saw a boy feathered pullet on this forum the other day so I guess it happens. What think you? Both were mis-sexed or McM has some oddball favorelles?

Didn't get a good comb shot, but there's nothing much there yet on this chick. Still small, straight, not pink yet. More concerned about the coloring.

Chick #2 is a barred something, most likely a barred rock, maybe a mix. Had a smallish head spot when born, has the dark wash on the front of the legs and is feathering in very dark. All that points to girl, but it's developing a decent comb and wattles for its age. Guesses?'

New pics, 4.5 weeks old:
Barred whatever : Still skinny legs, bit of wattle. Very dark. Hen or roo? I *think* roo, but still undecided.

Wow, I am asking a tough question I guess! I knew these were oddball chicks.

.. I'll have to get new pics in a week or so, maybe that will help. They are still in that 'oh no, the monster is here!' stage.

Yah, last two are same chick. It's ok if it's a roo, I have a place for him to go - my confusion was that all signs EXCEPT comb/wattles were pointing to girl.. but that comb makes me think it's a boyo.

Some people say barred rocks get combs earlier, but never having had one I had to ask!

The bird next to the barred whatever in his first pic is definitely a roo - you can only see his legs, but THOSE are some tree trunks. He's already got a huge red comb too.
