These chicks are 2 days shy of 5 weeks old and I know a little early to accurately ID gender but I have a couple questions I am hoping you fine people can answer. I got these chicks from Meyer Hatchery (8 of them) and will be posting more pics in a few weeks to help make sure they are indeed pullets. But in the meantime I am wondering about my Australorp's and Leghorns. One is feathering out nicely and tail growing out while the other is pretty scaggely with no tail feathers. I heard that cockerels have a tendency to not feather out as fast. Is that true and does she look like a he? My leghorns both have the largest combs which I know is pretty typical of the breed but one seems quite large for this age? All combs are pale which leads me to my last question. If any are cockerels, when should I expect the combs to start turning darker red and when do waddles start developing? Thanks so much for any and all help and opinions. This site has been so helpful and informative :love

PS Excuse the dust you see but OMG as dusty as I thought these creatures were going to be, they are 10X worse than that. Moving to the coop soon!

They are young. The only suspicious boy is the BA sitting on couch arm. For a BA there is more pink and size of comb than I would expect from a female. We’ve had M and F BA before, so I’ll see if I can find pics.

I forgot to post a picture of my other Austrolorp for comparison!! The first 2 pics in original post are the same bird. Also just so you know, that isn't my couch arm lol. I thankfully have an enclosed sun porch and they perch on the side of their brooder. Just didn't want anyone to think my couch is that dusty:p

You’ll need to wait longer. Nothing screams boy. If you bought sexed pullets from Meyer, they have a guarantee on gender, so that is good (you’ll still have to figure out what to do with an accidental male).

Thanks everyone for your opinions. Do any of you know the answer to my question about the comb and waddles? If cockerels, when do combs start to redden up and when do waddles start to develop? Thanks again!
