I hatched 3 eggs from a Barred Rock Cockerel x Black hen, and 3 eggs from a Black Sex Link Cockerel x Black hen and all came out with some barring or speckles like this (GoOut.jpg image)

However when I hatched eggs from my Black Sex Link pair, every single chick at 4 weeks is solid black. Obviously the barred gene did not pass in this instance or they are all females, but.... there's no sign of red feathering either. Is the black gene stronger than a red gene?

Black is dominant over most color genes. Some black birds produced from a crossing will have a little leakage in the hackles.

Thanks Mystery.. I'll have to wait and see if there's any of that when they finally get their hackles going.. Would be nice to see all red necks. (no pun intended)

You're welcome.
If there's any males, they may have leakage in the hackles, & shoulders.

Since the rooster was Barred, all offspring will be Barred.

I know my barred reproduces.. what I was wondering about was the Black Sex Linked Pair. Of their 4 chicks, they are solid black at 4 weeks.

She most likely would introduce both red leakage, & Extended black genes.

Barred Rock the Father is Extended Black plus barring, so all offspring are gonna be Cuckoo. Some may not be as noticeable as others.

I just realized the Barred bird is a Cuckoo Marans. He has pink legs, not yellow like a Barred Rock.

That would explain also why all the chicks from my 'other' Black sex linked roo x Black hen turned out looking like cockoo marans ! The three I was told were BSL's all came from the same bin at TSC. They were originally supposed to be Black Asians (or so the card on the cage said).
