I got a baby turkey today..Not sure on age but he /she has the wing feathers .. all others are still downy kinda fuzz.
the babe is pretty lethargic. I gave it some sugarwater.. maybe half a teaspoon to perk it up.. seemed to do a little better.. It eats and drings off and on but will not get up to do so. Lays in front of the dishes and sleeps.. and sleeps.. and sleeps.. I must say that the guy who sold em didnt really keep them warm today at the market. He said they where still under a heatlamp so I cranked up mine and he /she is warm.On a bed of hay with papertowels .. 28% gamebird starter feed and clean water.
Is it normal not to stand up alot to eat and drink..? I can imagine the shock of beeing in the cold.. no heat lamp and beeing scared at the market. In their cages they where not huddled together and kinda sitting on their belly, with head down in front of them. I felt sorry for that little bugger, as ugly as he is , I had to take him home.
Is Polyvisol advisable in the morning ( to late here to get it ) to add some to water ? or feed directly a little diluted to perk him up? .It might be another underlying issue he might have. but not sure what else I can do right now.
No visible injuries. no mites etc, and has pooped allready.
In the pic you can see how he sits there and thats it..I think he got up once to walk a step then plopped back down.
I am just concerned and want to save him if at all possible. As ugly and gangly as he is.. he allready grew on me.

any advise would be really appreciated
Thanks
Petra

Sorry for the quality of the pic.. heat lamp throws a weird light on it.

I know it took my two a day or two to "perk up" and walk around. They seemed ill, too. They didnt eat or drink the first day they were here. Just slept. I think what you are doing for him is what I would do. Give him the night, with the food and warmth, and see what he says tomorrow

Phew ok.. good to hear.. i picked it upand he just shakes like a leaf. I think he is just mortified of his new home ..I just hope he makes it.
He is the gangliest, ugliest oddshaped thing i have ever seen. Well.. besides the turkens they had there. But when he opens his beady little eyes.. Gahh who can resist it?

I will stop mothering him and leave him be tonight.

Oh and one more question.. he is white.. with some black dots on his wing feathers..The guy who sold em told me what they where called but I plum forgot the name.. what is that breed called?

thank you guys

If that is his poop, it looks like a nice normal one

I had a narragansett poult that just would not thrive. She didn't make it, but the advice I got was to keep up the sugar water and vitamin drops FREQUENTLY, it gives a short burst of energy so she can get up and start eating and drinking on her own. I squeezed a vitamin E capsule in her beak too every day, gave her probios, egg yolk, and basically "force" fed her goat milk soaked turkey starter.

She probably had something wrong with her to begin with. If it's a matter of chilling and stress, your poult should snap out of it with TLC like the others said. Turkeys also need other birds, so I wouldn't separate it unless it showed obvious signs of illness.

From the size of the poult compared to the waterer, you need to have the temp near 80 to 70 degrees. Mostly likely it's spending to much energy staying warm.
