Last night was lockdown for my first hatch in my Genesis 1588. I filled the second trough with water but according to the little hygrometer I have in there the humidity hasn't gone up all that much--maybe to 58? Am I doing something wrong? Help!

I use the same incubator and always have to throw in a wet sponge on top of filling the second trough. Try that and see if that helps.

Well, I don't keep sponges on hand, but after my baby wakes up from his nap maybe we'll head out and buy one. The stress of getting things right this first hatch is killin' me!

What's wrong with 58% humidity? I usually hatch between 55-60% in the 1588. Qualifier is that I have only used it 4 times. All were excellent to very good hatches though.

I tried the rolled up washcloth in a bowl with water. Humidity at 65%

Thanks!

Ranchhand if it works for you then there is NOTHING wrong with 58%. Paranoid first timer here reading too much, probably.

There are more cavities then the two to put additional water into. Just take a look. You can also use a papertowel soaked in water to get it higher. Also do not fill the cavities with cold water. I always use water that has 100 degrees. It takes way to long to get warm by itself, so you have to use water at the same temp as the machines setting.

yep.. that is what I just did.... fed an AI tube through the hole made for the electric egg turner and pushed several full 20cc syringe fulls of very warm water into one of the empty depressions in the plastic tray.... Humidity jumped right up without having to open the lid.

I didnt have that problem with my 1588......quite the opposite. Mine would stay around 50% by barely filling the first trough they recommend, but then would go down to 20-25% during the night or when I was at work. I just filled up the one trough to up the humidity and it stayed around 68-70% during lockdown. I thought about trying to adjust the temp according to the instructions to get it down to 99.5 when I go to incubate again but will do this without any eggs in. Right now Im waiting on the dozen to hatch due Mon or Tues that are in my LG. Temps have been staying 99 consistantly and I just filled up the troughs for lockdown.

I had been experimenting with mine for about a week before my coturnix eggs arrived three days ago and found that I needed both troughs filled to get to the 60% need for the first 14 days. I could not get up to 70% for the hatch without filling the other two wells in the plastic tray--basically almost covering the entire bottom of the bator with water. I didn't try the sponge.
