Woww!!
How old is he? Do the GH mature slowly in the way the
Phoenix do?
Also, Fly, Thanks for letting me know about my chicks.
They are doing great.
I have also been in touch with a guy in Utah that has
10 GH pairs that he had posted for sale.
He had some local people wanting chicks and eggs,
& he emailed me about what I would offer him for them.
The original add had mentioned that they were larger birds,
and one of the names he dropped was one I had read who
developed them.
I have no idea what would be a fair price for the both of us.
He sent me some pics & they are 1 year old but dont have
saddles like thehackleguy's.
It would be an 11 hour trip one way to pick them up,
so it is not close.
Anybody know of some figures to determine a price?
I can send the pic's if I get a pm & email address to help me.
In that picture he is about 18 months old, it takes me about 10-13 months to have saddles dragging on the floor for most of my birds. However some of them (grizzly in particular) have the slow feathering gene and they take a little longer.
Here is a pic of the same bird with me holding him, you can get a better idea of his size and hackle length.
I also have genetic hackle birds. I was wondering if you have bred the bird in the photo. If you have I was wondering if you could share with us how you keep the saddles in good condition.
I usually put one rooster with 5 hens. Within a short time the saddles start to get damaged or are lost from the activity in the pen. I regularly see the hens standing on them when they are eating or getting water
Yes, this picture was taken in the middle of the breeding season. My pens are 4 foot wide by 10 foot long, I usuall only put 4 hens and one rooster per pen. I do have some damage to the feathers, if you were to look close you would see that most of them have broken tips. However even at this length they are still in full blood feather so I rarely notice them getting shorter. I also use just a thin layer of pine shavings in my pens, this seems to keep any wet droppings from damaging the feathers to much.
My first eggs are due to hatch this weekend from the first generation of my genetic hackle birds. These are the F1 project, this fall they will be crossed to some other genetic hackle stock this fall. I am rather excited to see how these turn out. If all goes as planned, they should all be crele with okay length
Took some picks of my young hackles from fly:
Looks like I have 3 cockerels. The dark smaller ones
are the Ohiki & Ohiki X from Amanda.
Will need to get some better shots without the am sun on them....
Dont know what to call that color of that one with red in front then blue toward the back in the last pic.
The other light one from that roos I really liked, is finally starting to get some dun color with all that white, so would that be a khaki, instead of dun? The color didnt even show up in these pics.
The blue dun is starting to get some saddle to him already.
Ed, got your message.... Will try to give you a call soon. No, I didnt get any of those birds in Utah.
He had a local guy that wanted all of them... He never said what he wanted for them. I emailed him to try to get some eggs, and didnt hear back.
With all these beautiful cockerels, will still need some more eggs to get some pullets!!!!
