Hi Leah! Looks like frizzling now. Interesting that you have no frizzle birds that could be possible parents.
Genetics can be fine and puzzling things.

it looks black... you can't breed black out of 2 mottle birds... the frizzling can hapen if one of the parents is F/f and mf/mf...
