genetically altered meat birds

Quote:
In the past every animal was used duel purpose, so now,
we may toss the mule in the ground, our ancestor's would not allow the meat to be wasted, the fruit to be blemish free, use real manure in the ground even tho it may cause other health issues (I'm sure there are a lot of them)

Selective breeding is something that happens on the conscious level of Man now that we comprehend genetics (through experimentation), for example, my genetic past and my DH's genetics are plagued with heart, cancer, diabetes and birth defects, didn't "god" give us the conscious
intelligence validated through science to stop these genes from going on? Now we can have tests BEFORE we get pregnant to acknowledge the complications and make educated choices. Genes are not spliced or removed from the egg (at this point) and there will always be those that want that...but like for instance, I choose not to have children. Having a genetic copy of me I want to spare that new life from living a tough life, even tho someday it could be cured- through science. Its my responsibility to choose what I feel fit to do in this life.

(Do not get angry or debate of God etc) But God gave us the ability to move forward, the intelligence to understand what science is doing, to choose for ourselves what is good/bad and the ability to debate some of these items with others by hearing or understanding another's points. God cannot be brought into this subject. Science has learned to alter animals, raise them from a single cell. This has gone on for years, not saying right or wrong. To make the better, bigger, stronger carrot/corn/tomato etc to feed the world. And again, they have heirloom programs for most of the plant/animal lives. Keep your choice pure with seed saving, animal breeding and living a pure life (as long as you can do without boxed mac and cheese, Cheerios's and packaged cookies and meats)

Its like not utilizing modern medicine in these times, respectfully to those religions that do not believe in blood transfusions or surgeries etc, the rest of us going to a Herbal or Dr. for that ability to prevent a "stroke" by taking the prescribed medication/herbs to lower it to prevent the complications.

Leaving life up to God when God created those curios to see what else is out there to create a better life. How we live is entirely up to us. By the way, I do agree with the breeding programs, the cross' to bring a better bird for eating, laying, or the mule for steady strong and able bodies to work for us- even tho we own most animals for the status symbol not for the work, chores of hauling a wagon, plow or going to the store.

I hope this made sense, I'm rambling and babbling. Sorry 'bout that!!!

I will let you in on a well known ( or little known) secret . Mission San Louis Rey in S. Cal has an annual Bar-B-Que and one of the dishes is a pit cooked burro. I had a delicous and heafty helping several years ago only it didn't taste like chicken. I will also let you in on another well known secret... This planet existed for millions of years without any living organisms. By some random act ( or by God's will )there was a combination of inorganic molecules and organic chemicals were formed. Time passed and some of these organic chemicals randomly came together and formed living forms. Time passed and some of these living forms came together and formed new living organisms. Could this be considered genetically altered organisms ? More time passed and enter the age of dinasours. Could this be considered as genetically altered orgainsms? Again time passed and some catastrophic event happened and caused their massive extinction. More time passed and their was the rise of mammals. Could this be considered as genetically altered organisms? More time passed and we now have millions of new species. How did this happen? could there have been the exchange of genetic material between species to create new ones? Could radiation from the sun alter and/ or create new genetic material to create a new life form? Could this be considered to be as genetically altered organisms? There is now scientific proof that our beloved chicken decended from the dinasaours. Could this be considered to be genetically altered organisms? So how different has Mother Nature created new life forms than our present day scientists are now doing using the very same natural materials and methods? Mother Nature has tried many different life forms ...some succeded and many others have become extinct because they couldn't compete for food, mates or environment. Do you own a microwaveand use it daily to heat your food? In nature Microwaves can and more than likely cause genetic mutations. Did you know that the scientists have been using irradiation teckniques to genetically alter and create triploid and tetraploid crops for over the last half century and all of us are benefiting from them? Did you know that we irradiate fruits, vegatables, and meats to kill organisms that may contaminate our food supplies for the past half century? Without that many people all over the world would starve to death. The only difference is that now man has gained the knowledge to assist Mother Nature to speed up evolution in the test tube.

hey! i say the following with good will only:
i believe everyone has an opinion and should have a choice.
I would like to be able to choose whether or not I eat genetically modified foods and when foods will not be labeled that choice is taken from me. I believe that natural food is the best food, as God intended it. Meat packed with chemicals, factory eggs and meat etc, is harmful and science gone awry.. I know in many cases it cannot be helped, but I believe things are going to far.
I know science has done some wonderful and great things, but when you mix science and greed together mankind loses.
I believe in selective breeding also, but not to a point where fruits and vegies are bigger and more colorful but lose nutritional value.
We get our vitality from healthy nutritious food, not overprocessed garbage pretending to be food. But please dont misunderstand me, im FOR the betterment of mankind, but sceince has discoveries AND failures, I believe if we monkey around with genetics too much we may get some unintended results that are irreversible

Hi, even though I am new to this forum, i do now allot about hybridization and genetics. Hybridization is something that has to happen with breeding of any type of living organism. As tomatoes were thousands of years ago. Tomatoes were first just berries living in the amazons of South America near Ecuador, and then after selective breeding they made tomatoes bigger, and bigger. Until now we have different types of tomatoes that came from one species. I agree that Cornish xs are good for our growing population and it is needed for it, and for feeding many, but why reside to Genetic engineering, or biotechnology of that kind where you take different genes of different species of organisms and mix them around in a lab. It is true that it is similar to selective breeding, but atleast we are not messing with what God has done by we mixing different species' genes. but we should instead naturally cross same species to get what we might want in the species, even if it takes long, but thats what our ancestors did to make chickens bigger, tastier. Make cows produce more milk, just breeding with the best to get those qualities. Due to that there hasnt been an unbalance of genetics, and no problems that might affect our health or life. I am happy someone brought this up in this forum. Thanks!

How about this for some food for thaught. Anthropologists tell us that "Lucy" was the first human woman and the great grandmother of all of us. She still must have mated with an apelike creature similar to her( but still not human) to reproduce and carry on her genetic line as there was no "human" male at that time. Now, have you ever considered what this world would be like IF one of "Lucy's" daughters mated with the monkey down the hill instead of choosing to play hankey panky with one of "Lucy's" sons? He more than likely was much smarter than the others in his group, so he probably became the leader and therefore more sexually attractive as he was better able to provide for her offspring. Perhaps we would still be swinging through the trees if she chose the monkey. And what about their offspring... how did they make their decisions in choosing a mating partner? Could this possibly be the first example of human intervention act( by choosing brain over brawn) in creating a whole new species? We may never know, but still fun to ponder.

With natural breeding, species are closely related. Genes are combined in different ways, but the genes themselves are not altered. The exception to that is that there are occasional mutations. Favorable ones survive, the others perish. Natural breeding includes hybrids. Some of them don't turn out very well, some are very nice. But the genes themselves remain unchanged, they're just recombined. And with hybrid animals, like mules, they're sterile, they can't reproduce and completely replace horses and donkeys as separate species. Both horses and donkeys continue to be only horses and donkeys, even if they breed with each other.

This natural breeding process, even if AI is used, will never, ever, no, not ever, place fish genes in a strawberry. It will not ever grow a human ear on the back of a mouse. It will not put bacteria genes into a plant. It will not put spider genes in a goat. Genetic engineering takes genes, alters them, (for example, adding recombinant DNA so that the genes are able to survival when placed in a different species) and puts them where they don't belong. The process isn't as certain as most people believe, either. The people doing this can't predict how those genes will interact. They don't even always go where they're intended to go. They throw the genes together, then grow out the plants or embryos by the thousands, and a few will sometimes have the traits they intended. When they get a sample they're satisfied with, they propagate it. There's no way to ascertain how this changed organism will interact with other organism in the environment, especially in the long-term.

I'm sure there are some valid, useful, even life-saving things that can be done with genetic engineering. Medical applications could be extremely beneficial. Those types of applications would be used in a carefully controlled situation.

Screwing around with our food supply is not the same thing. Introducing these wild combinations of genes and turning them loose in the environment, with no way to contain or control them, is one of the most foolhardy things that mankind has done. The consequences are unpredictable, and could have serious repercussions in the long run. We humans have a long history of getting it wrong when it comes to our impact on the environment, and what is and isn't safe. This practice has the potential of doing great harm to every living thing on the planet. Those stakes are too high for me to want to gamble.

that was a good post and my belief also...well stated
if im not mistaken, mutations in pathogens happened in long intervals apart down the time line of history. But mutations are now happening at an accelerated rate. I kinda believe that mans over monky-ing (Lucy wasnt one of my ancestors)
of these pathogens in the wrong way has something to do with that. Much oversight with the publics ability to choose whether are not to eat these genetically modified foods needs to be considered.
Natural selection has worked over time and is proven, why do we have to splice genes when such devestation is a possibility?

Once this gets started, i think that we'll learn that lettin the cat outta the bag is a whole lot easier than puttin it back.

I dont know about yall but I want to know that whatever i was eating is somewhere on the food chain, not created to spite it!
