genetics behind Lemon Blue Cochin

Wait- it's that simple? Will they breed true, or will you get a mix in subsequent generations? Would a partridge roo work as a brown red? Why hasn't anyone done this in Ameraucanas????

No, it his chart, the Splash he is referring to are Lemon Splashes from Lemon Blue Breedings, but once you get true Lemon Blue and breed Lemon Blue to Lemon Blue, they will breed true to the pattern, but like all blue/blue patterned colors, they will produce blacks and splashs so breeding Lemon Blue to Lemon Blue will give Lemon Blues, Lemon Splashes, and Brown Reds.

No a partridge Rock cant be used as a Brown Red in a Lemon Blue project, but if you wanted to work on Blue Partridge, you can start with Partridges and Blues and Splashes.

Are there Brown Red Ameraucanas ? If so it would be possible to make Lemon Blues.

Not to hijack this but here is my lemon Blue. I am thinking of crossing with Part, pure white or a black (came from blue lines so she will throw blue chicks). what do you guys think of the color. I have had several BYC want him but I do not ship birds. I then ran across the hens so I am keeping for now.

Yep, I would imagine they would both be hard to find.

Haha and yep, ol Hogzilla done got capped. I heard that he was raised by a lady and fed ground up peanuts ( peanut butter for livestock) and high protein fish food from Kens Fish hatchery and thats why he got so big to where he couldnt even walk anymore and they shot him and made out like they found him wild. A friend sent me an email about a big ol Piney Woods Rooter that was killed in TX.

That is a hobby named Lemon Blue from a Buff X Blue cross, it is not true Lemon Blue. Lemon Blue comes from breeding from Brown Reds, not Buffs.

The lady I bought him from only raises Cochin's and several different breeds as well. This is one of the one's she left my get as she had a few in her lemon blue pen. she was breeding lemon blue hens to lemon blue roosters. Did I miss understand her? I am new to cochins so what are you calling a red...

The the ones she was breeding, if they are like the one you have, are not true Lemon Blues in the first place, whoever first started breeding them just made up the name Lemon Blue when they first started breeding from Buff and Blue crosses and they got a bird with Buff ( Lemon) and Blue colorings at the same time, but they can have a variation of patterns and what makes a Lemon Blue a Lemon Blue is its specific pattern, it has to be bred from Brown Red Cochins ( Brown Red is the same color as Black Copper Marans and Brown Red colored Gamefowl) It is Brown Red with the Black being replace by blue so it still has the Red hackle and saddle markings, just a blue body.

So your bird is like a false Lemon Blue. Its just like some of these projects now days that people are calling Crele just becuase it is a barred bird with some red in it. Some are Barred Partridge or just mixed up barred Red Columbian colored birds and people are calling it Crele. But true Crele is only Barred Red Duckwing, ( Barred BBRed.) So its the same case, your bird was falsely being called Lemon Blue just because it has Buff and Blue markings, just as some birds are falsely being called Crele, just becuase they are barred with red markings.

Ok then....Well should I cross him with pure white, black (came from blue line) or Partridge? Or should I just not cross and go with a different breed. I am guess I will get an array of colors.

Monkeying,
I'm also clearly very new as well, but there is no cross that you can make to get a true lemon blue color form. However, if you are trying for the buff/blue coloring, I would think your best bet would be the black carrying the blue gene. There is an awful lot of variation in these buff/blue crosses. Some are really beautiful (some not so much) it's hard to say what you'll get. With the true lemon blues, once you get them, they should breed true with blue/black/splash and the red (lemon) head, etc. Good luck on your project.
